Make a fun holiday outfit with this delightful pattern hack that comes to us from Karen of Forever 18 Inches!

Giveaway Update:  Our winner is Jeannette who said "My favorite Christmas tradition, How can you pick one, I love everything about christmas, from baking cookies to wrapping beautiful presents, family, church, decorations and snow on Christmas Eve. if we’re lucky. It truly is the Most Wonderful time of the Year." Thanks to all who entered!  We loved reading through all the comments!

Get into the holiday spirit as Karen teaches us how to use her Curving Cardigan pattern and Versatility Dress pattern to create a charming holiday outfit that is sure to spread a little Christmas joy to all who see it! Complete the outfit with the hat from the Doll Tag Clothing Santa pattern!

(Click on the image or the link above to find the patterns on Pixie Faire.)

Let's get started..

Supplies Needed:
-1/4 yd. Medium-weight one-way stretch stable knit fabric (no more than 30% stretch)
- 1/2 yd. lightweight fleece with a one-way stretch
- Matching thread
-Small, very sharp scissors
- ¼" Stay Tape (1/2" wide tape can be cut lengthwise) OR ¼" strips of very lightweight interfacing
- Snaps or Velcro to close the back of the dress
- A pom pom about the size of a nickel
- 1/3 yd. 3/8" black ribbon for a belt
- One decorative slide with a 3/8" opening to use as a belt buckle
- 1" of Hook-and-Loop to close the belt
- Fabri-Tac or other glue to apply the Hook-and-Loop to the belt

To begin: Make the cardigan and hat in the contrasting knit and fleece fabrics according to the pattern directions.

Instructions:

1. Cut a rectangle from the knit fabric measuring 5.75" x 30.5", as directed in the Option 3 layout for the Versatility Dress. Next, cut a rectangle from the fleece fabric measuring 2.5" x 31". Make sure the stretch is cut with the long side of the rectangle.

2. Pin one long edge of the fleece to one long edge of the knit, RIGHT sides together. Allow about ½" of the fleece to overlap each side of the knit. Stitch, using a ½" wide seam.

3. Using small, sharp scissors, trim off half of the seam allowance on the fleece only.

4. WRAP the fleece over the edge of the knit and pin it in place.
Here's a view from the WRONG side….

…and a view from the RIGHT side.

5. Working from the RIGHT side, stitch a scant 1/8" above the fleece/knit seam onto the knit (with thread that matches the fabric). Trim the short edges of the fleece to the same length as the short edges of the knit Skirt.

6. Working from the WRONG side, trim away the excess fleece very close to the stitching line. (No worries; the fleece won't ravel) Congratulations! You've finished the edge of the skirt for the dress. Proceed to the Option 3 instructions for the Versatility Dress and sew as directed (except for the hem, which you've already already sewn).

7. To make the belt: Pull the slide onto the ribbon and center it. Try the dress on your doll, and fit the belt over the dress to determine the length you need. Fold the edges of the ribbon over to the WRONG side and glue them with Fabri-Tac; then glue corresponding ½" pieces of Hook-and-Loop onto the belt ends.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your outfit is finished!

One of my favourite Christmas traditions is to continue what I experienced as a child – the whole family together at my grandparent’s place, joined by all the aunts, uncles and cousins. Growing up it became my parents who were the grandparents setting memories for the little ones.
Now, we’re the grandparents with the little ones excitedly running around at Christmas joined by their parents, aunts and uncles.
I barely remember the food, weather, presents or any other detail but what sticks strong is the cherished memories of getting together

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is baking Christmas cookies and other treats to share with family, friends, and neighbors, just as my mother did when I was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. I still use some of her recipes but have many other newer favorites too. It’s a blessing to me seeing my daughters do the same things with their families now.

This is an adorable outfit and I’m sure my granddaughters who own American Girl dolls would love one. Thanks for the great tutorial as well as the opportunity to win an outfit!

I love making gingerbread men with my grandchildren. It started with our granddaughter when she was 11 mo old. We finally found what we thought was the perfect recipe with her. Four years later her brother joined us. Now we have four little ones. The 6 mo old will just cheer us on this year. I love to watch how their creativity grows each year. We send them out to family who do not live close by.
The Santa’s Helper outfit is just adorable. Thank you for the tutorial. I must admit I would love to win it instead of adding one more thing to an extensive list of to-do’s.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is making new outfits for the grands dolls. this started years ago when my best friend and I would spend countless hours making different outfits for our daughters dolls. Most were sewn by hand and carefully stitched so that they would endure the handling of the sometimes not so gentle girls. Now I sew these beautifully designed clothes using my many machines but still with the love I experienced over forty years ago.

November 25, 2016

“ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IS.. hanging christmas stockings and I made my own and each christmas I would hand embroider a christmas item or scene and add the year underneath it. Started in 1977 with Santa and his sleigh for my son who was born that year. As he got older the item reflected his interests from teenage ninja turtles to star trek. When he was 10 we adopted a 7 yr old little girl. She had been abused and neglected from 18 months on and was taken away from her birth mom at 4 1/2. So I made her a stocking and she loved the song away in a manger so that was the first thing I put on her stocking and the year 1987. So again each year we discussed what they wanted put on the stocking and I embroidered it and the year. So fast forward 5 years later and she had been in a stable home now for 5 1/2 straight years my daughter was sitting on the floor by the xmas tree looking at her stocking and she started counting the items on her stocking and she looks up at me and says and next year you will put another one on here, I told her yes one for every christmas you are my little girl. It was such a poignant moment in her life as she finally found a place that was her forever home and the stocking brought it home for her. She finally had continuity in her life. It still gives me goosebumps just remembering that moment. We had many years of therapy to get her where she needed to be as she was unattached, acted out and because of the sexual abuse had the two – twenty syndrome. Now she is 36 and has grown into a wonderful young woman who I could not love more than life itself. She still hangs up the stocking on her mantle of her condo every Christmas and she is still my little girl. Thanks for allowing me to share this. Now have made stocking for my sons daughters that he is raising on his own. .”

These stockings are filled with lots of fruit, a little candy and best of all, their very favorite snack. These favorite snacks are exclusively theirs….meaning they do NOT have to share with anyone. These snacks range from microwave popcorn, Nilla Wafer cookies, Funyuns, Royal Dansk Danish Butter Cookies, hot chocolate, etc. Our oldest grandson is 19 and our youngest is 5. Finally, we take turns opening the presents. Some of them are nice, and some are very funny, and there is usually one that gets re-used every year. It’s a fun game.
