12 Days Of Christmas ›

12 Days Of Christmas - Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of our 12 Days Of Christmas celebration!

One of the parts I love about sewing is learning new things and passing along my knowledge to others. Last year I had the opportunity to write and photograph the content for the new Idiots Guides: Sewing book. The book is designed for beginners, filled with full color illustrations, step by step photo’s, and dozen’s of fun projects to practice the skills learned. Both Melinda and Karin (from The Liberty Jane Team) worked with me to create all the cute projects featured in the book…

Today we are giving away TWO physical copies of The book Idiots Guides: Sewing by Cinnamon Miles (that’s me!).

[Giveaway Ended - The winners are Annaely and Annette B. - They have been contacted by email]

This book is such an amazing resource!  You can find it at your local book store or online at Amazon. It is available in print and just recently released in the kindle version!

We are giving away two separate copies, two winners will be selected. Each copy will be autographed by Cinnamon too!

To enter simply respond to this post and complete this sentence:

“The first sewing project I made was…(insert here) “

Comments must be left (on this blog post) by midnight (pacific), today, 12/26/2014.

One entry per person.

No purchase necessary, void where prohibited.

The winner will be chosen randomly from the comments received and contacted through the email provided in the comment.

We will choose a winner and modify this post tomorrow to let everyone know who won.

Okay, good luck, and if we’ve forgotten anything we will modify and/or update this post as needed.

Happy Holidays,

Cinnamon & The Liberty Jane / Pixie Faire Team

P.S. If you're interested in learning to sew, we have the Sewing Basics Video Class launching in January. You can click here to get more info and enroll!

My first sewing project was an apron that I made in HomeEc class in school. This wasn’t just an ordinary apron as our teacher was very creative. The pockets of the apron were pot hot holders which you used by picking up the corners of your apron when lifting hot pots from the stove. We were taught to hand quilt the pot holders and bind the edges with bias binding before attaching them to the apron skirt. You always knew where your pot holders were. Many years later I made a dozen of these aprons as Christmas presents for my Mom’s Sunday school girls students.

My first sewing project was a full sized quilt. My grandmother helped me. This was my introduction to pattern layout, pinning and cutting. I also learned the intricacies of carefully pricing to make an accurate design. This was my first attempt to use the sewing machine. Grandma had a 1922 Singer treadle machine. This is the machine that I learned on. The quilt was fun and ensured many hours at my grandmother’s side. When it was completed, I knew that I could do anything.

As far as I can remember my first sewing project was a box pleated skirt. I was in a home economics class while in boarding school in 1963 at a convent in Nova Scotia, Canada. I can’t remember if I tried to do anything before that time. I think I was 15 about 1963.

The first sewing project I made was for home ec. It was awful, my mother forgot to get my supplies, so she sent in HER next one, 4 yards of brown gingham and a ruffled granny dress pattern(for me) I actually CRIED because I couldn’t understand any of the pattern layout. The teacher was angry that she’d sent something so hard. Wow, I’d forgotten about all that!

The first sewing project I made was, of course – doll clothes. I was 8 years old. My mother was a seamstress and had been teaching me some simple sewing steps. I was always mesmerized by her skills and would watch her in awe for what seamed like hours. I learned a lot from watching her and I was a natural at sewing. All of our Barbies has the best wardrobe in the neighberhood!

My first sewing project was a skirt for my american girl doll when I was in about 3rd grade
My mom had to help me with that, but now I’ve outgrown most of her help and have really enjoyed using the liberty jane patterns for my doll. The ruched jacket is my favorite so far! I’ve even started to try to make my own patterns.
Thank you liberty jane!

The first sewing project I made was a pair of slacks for myself. My Aunt was visiting. Her and mom chatted while I sewed away in the living room. I finished my pants, smiled really big and held them up for all to see. My smile quickly faded when I realized I had sewn the legs together instead of separate. My Aunt laughed until the day she died about my facial reaction. I smile now thinking of how humorous it was to her.

My first sewing project was making my own Easter outfit. It was lavender color with a lavender print blouse. I learned from start to finish. Learned to read a pattern, figure how much material was needed, lay the patterns out and cut the material. Also learned how to.make button holes and put in a zipper, I was so proud to wear my new homemade Easter outfit to Church. And the best thing about it was my Mom taught me. Now I am going to start teaching my Grandaughters to sew. First project will be doll quilts for their 18" dolls. I can’t wait. This book would definitely help them and give me some pointers. Thank you for such great patterns.

The first sewing project I made was a top for my homemec (sp) class in high school. We had a fashion show to show our parents what we had made. I learned to put my first zipper in with that shirt, with my mothers help, of course. Honestly, when your around sewing, you really know how, you’re just not aware. My daughter did the same thing, and now my granddaughter watches me sew. It’s a tradition to be passed down, and keep it alive!!

The first sewing project I made was a housecoat for my barbie doll made out a an old pair of pajama material. I was 12 years old at the time and I was watching my older sister sewing and was so intrigued that I decided to try something myself. She had a sewing machine but I didn’t so I use just a thread and needle and made the housecoat by hand. I didn’t have a pattern to use but I utilized one of the other coats to trace a basic pattern to follow and just sewed it all together. Although I wasn’t an expert on sewing back then, reflecting back, I believe, for a 12 year old I did pretty good. It had sleeves, a collar and buttons with buttonholes too. It was then that I knew I wanted to sew and several years later I got my own sewing machine and haven’t stopped sewing since.

The very first sewing project I made was a Raggedy Ann Doll. The greatest feat of this endeavor was that I made the doll on an old fashioned Singer treadle sewing machine that originally belonged to my Grandmother. The sewing machine was and continues to be a cherished item because my Grandmother passed away when my mother was only four years old. The sewing machine passed through many hands. It was used to sew leather to make shoes in my Grandfather’s shoe shop before it was given to my Aunt. My aunt created many beautiful wedding gowns before it was given to my Mother. The sewing machine has a place of honor it my parent’s house. It is a beautiful reminder of the artisans of my Mother’s family and my first attempts in sewing.
My Raggedy Ann Doll with her crooked seams and well loved form sits on the guest bed in my childhood home. She is a friendly face that greets me and all the other family member young and old who come home to visit. She as well as the sewing machine I used to create her are a wonderful reminder of the beginning journey into the love of textiles and my ability to create beautiful things with my heart, imagination, and hands.

Wow- that was 50 or so years ago. I remember though that it was with my grandma. She taught me how to see on a button and hand sew items. I loved her button box and several years ago took her button box and sewed a chevron shaped collar that I could put on any item of clothing I wore(hook/eye) and hand sewed all her beautiful buttons on. I get a ton of compliments because old buttons make a wonderful conversation piece and memories of her. She passed away in 1983.

I want to comment, but I don’t want the book. Give it to a beginner—I’m not. The first thing I sewed was a red and white gingham dress. My mother was an excellent seamstress, and she supervised. The dress had a “V” neckline front and back with figure eight ties that went under the should seam and tied on top. That made it into a sundress. I took two years of Home Ec in high school. The first year I made a jumper and a blouse. The second year I made a lined, wool suite with bound button holes and covered buttons. I wore it all through high school, college, and for more than five years after I married. The skirt was about to the point where you could see through it when I threw it away.

I was 10 years old and in the children’s hospital for many months, but I was able to be out of bed so I got to go to the occupational therapy room, which was a big deal for us patients!
It was near Christmas so I decided to make a gift for my sister. She, along with the rest of the kids in our family, belonged to 4-H so I made her an apron with the 4-H logo around the bottom of it! I used a stencil to draw the figures and then I painted them on the fabric with green paint. I got to use the sewing machine to stitch the apron together! From then on, I was hooked on sewing!!
