12 Days of Christmas - Day 10

Welcome to Day 10 of our 12 Days Of Christmas celebration!

[Giveaway Ended - Congrats to Lucy!]

Today we are giving away something to everyone! I’m often asked where I find fabrics, notions, wigs, shoes, etc. The launch of Pixie Packs this past year has been an exciting addition to our business! We are always on the hunt for sewing items that work for the doll scale propotions. If you love the idea of a personal shopper and want a kit that's ready to go with all the notions and supplies, be sure to check out the complete collection of Pixie Packs we have and watch for new ones to be added next week! But some of you might love the hunt and want to browse sites to shop for your own supplies... So for today I wanted to share 10 resources from my personal list of places to shop for doll crafting and sewing supplies… Enjoy!

And ONE lucky winner will also win a $50.00 Visa Gift Card to go on a shopping spree!

Cinnamon’s Top Ten Places to Shop:

  • Britex Fabrics  - Located in San Francisco, CA – This is my absolute favorite place to shop for fabrics! The store is just so beautifully laid out, all 4 floors! The fabrics are displayed by color, from floor to ceiling, there’s one floor just for trims and buttons, and my favorite is the remnants section up on the top floor! I made a video last year when I visited, here's a peek... You can shop online, but if you ever get the opportunity to visit, you simply have to go and give yourself plenty of time to soak it all in! We were down in CA for the holidays and I was able to stop in and stock up a bit, be sure to check back tomorrow for the Day 11 giveaway, I’ll be giving away some beautiful fabrics!
  • Zipper That Doll – This is the place to get 5 and 6 inch zippers!
  • CR’s Crafts – Tiny belt buckles are hard to find, but this store has a variety to choose from. Use these buckles for the Shibuya Jacket and the Motorcycle Jacket.
  • Ruby Red Galleria – Does your doll need a hair makeover? This is the place to find great replacement wigs for you American Girl Doll. You can easily peel off the wig that’s on your doll and replace it with one of these great looking wigs.
  • Hairbow Supplies (for FOE Elastic) – Here’s a great selection of Fold Over Elastic, You can use this to make dance leotards or swimsuits with the LJC Free swimsuit pattern! It also works great to make cami style tanks from the strappy tank top pattern and panties with the LUB Days of The Week Panties pattern.
  • SpoonflowerThis site let's you upload your own designs and create unique fabrics and gift wrap! We used this to create our Liberty Jane Fabric used in our dress forms!
  • Fabric.com  - They have a great selection of a variety of fabrics and will send you swatches to sample first.
  • Marshal’s, Ross, Target, Nordstrom Rack - This may seem like an odd place to have on the list, but I am always scouring the clearance racks at stores like this to find great fabrics at super discounted prices! The key to realistic looking outfits for dolls is all about the fabric choices!
  • Paper Mart – looking for packaging for your outfits? paper mart has a large variety of boxes, bags, and tissue to get you started! It's also a great place to get grosgrain ribbon!
  • Claires – (find it in most mall’s across the US) This is a fun place to shop for tiny items, like mini backpacks, lip glosses that look like doll size soda cans, and discounted jewelery that can be turned into a variety of doll accessories!

I have the hardest time finding small print fabrics and small trims. I shop JoAnn’s, Hancock’s, and Hobby Lobby. I also scan ebay and Amazon. I order my notions on line when possible, as Hobby Lobby no longer carries the Dritz Doll Clothes line of notions. Since I exhibit my doll clothes at a state fair, everything has to be matching and appropriate. Sometimes, it takes a year or two before I can locate everything I need to do a design I have made.

My favorite place to shop for fabrics is my own home. For years I bought fabric with the intention of sewing, but work got in the way. Now I am retired and have quite a stash of fabric stored away. It’s all vintage now, so when I find something interesting, I can make doll clothes for my grand-daughters’ American Girl dolls.

“My favorite place to shop for fabrics and notions is Fabricland]”. It is a chain across Canada and carries many "different’ THINGS. I[ve purchased lots of small scale patterns, and interesting stretch fabrics. I love their “sale” and remnant tables and their HOME DECOR tables when making “fancy dancy duds” for the dollies.

if you are in Quebec, the name is FABRICVILLE and the signs are in French.
They also carry 4inch zippers in weird leftover colours… usually 3/$1.00. very helpful.

I live in the UK and am a big fan of Pixie Fairie. I recently bought the shoe pack which was posted out to me and arrived quickly. Only downside was that I had to pay tax on the box which was an additional £11.50, about 18 dollars which made it an expensive pack for 4 pairs of dolls shoes. I love the patterns and have purchased and downloaded several.
My favourite fabric store in the UK is John Lewis and I can buy remnant
there. I also like to recycle my grandkids outgrown clothes for their dolls outfits..
I would love to be able to buy an American Girl doll and also to visit some of the craft stores that are mentioned.
The hardest thing to find here are the trims and finishes needed for the dolls shoes.

In Minneapolis it has been an interesting year to find what you want in fabrics. Mill End Fabrics closed all their stores where I could always find something I needed. But luck came my way when my daughter and I were invited to take all the sample fabrics from Kwik Sew when they sold to McCalls. It was so generous of the owners and we loaded up her car with fabric and notions.

Living in New Zealand means I don’t get Pixie Packs unfortunately. I live in a smaller city in the South Island, so it is hard to get notions too. I am finding it HEAPS easier to get fabrics now after doing the Design Academy (and the tips on there). Now I have an eclectic way of getting things from scrapbooking places, op shops, mall shops, secondhand (from family members or myself), $2 type shops, and general toy shops. The “hunt” is a lot of fun. I have the hardest time finding appropriate (and interesting!) button sizes (without paying oodles).

Wow! It’s been fun reading these many comments! I also love to find barely-used baby & children’s clothing at garage sales. Sometimes I buy an article just for the buttons. I like to look in the clearance section at WalMart, both infant & girls’ section. Some outfits have the neat coordinating prints we cant find at the local fabric stores. Depending on the article, i will spend up to $3 to get some doll – appropriate fabric. I look at the ready-to-wear and wish we had access to many of these fabrics. I’m always cost conscious. I Shop local with coupons…Hancocks, JoAnns, Hobby Lobby. Also Dollar Tree as someone else mentioned. I love Pixie Faire!

My favorite place to shop is SAS in Tempe Az. They have lycra for 1/4the price of the other places. You never know what you will find!

I have the hardest time finding the jersey sports mesh for baseball and football jerseys. It seem as if the local stores only carry it a couple of months during the year and there isn’t much of a color selection.

My favorite place to “shop” for fabric is the shelf in my studio closet! I’ve amassed quite a collection of gorgeous textiles. This years resolution is to simplify so I’ll be busy turning it into lovely clothing and accessories.

My favorite place to get fabric is JoAnn Fabric and Craft store, but I need to check out the new Hobby Lobby that just opened nearby.
The fabric I have the hardest time finding is flannel that is safe for use in sleepwear(or at least isn’t labeled otherwise!) It’s gotta be around somewhere….

My favorite store to shop is Hobby Lobby as it is the only store with a fair selection within 30 miles or my stash which is quite extensive.

Thrift stores and Hancock are where I find my best fabrics and some notions, but I have difficulty finding small-scale tweeds and other woolens, small overalls hasps, buckles, and separating zippers. I have bought second-hand shoes in order to get buckles! Thank you for your service and consideration of others, both for your customers and the purse ministry.

I’d love to see a pixie pack for some of the “Frozen” heroines. Perhaps one for some of the dressier dresses?? Like Ardith or Betsy!!
