The first sewing project I made was a blouse for myself in 1959. I had a great deal of help
from my mother, who preferred knitting to sewing, but she believed it was important for
my sister and me to learn how to use the sewing machine. The blouse was not a master-piece, but it began a life-long love of sewing all kinds of things- clothes, toys, quilts, bags,
drapes, etc. My sister became an incredible knitter, but still knows how to use the sewing
machine.

The first sewing project I ever made was a skirt in home-ech. class. It is funny how well you remember your first project. It was pink with white bunnies, yes, I was so proud, it even had a zipper. I have been sewing ever since. To bad thing is no more home-economics classes anymore!

The first project I made was when I was about 10 years old. I asked my mom to help make a doll jacket for one of my dolls I had received for Christmas. When I asked her she was busy cooking and cleaning house so I decided to cut my on pattern and made a hooded jacket with two button holes that I stitched by hand. I was so proud of it and still have it 54 years later.

My very first sewing project I remember was learning to hand gather fabric with my great grandmother – a doll skirt made from a flour sack probably in 1957 or 58, before I started school. I learned many of my sewing skills from the women in my life – my maternal great grandmother, my grandmothers – who both insisted that the inside look as good as the outside — and my mother who learned French weaving to support herself during World War II. She also made shoes at I Magum in Chicago. I have designed and sewn for the theater – both stage and opera. I have designed and sewn over 30 wedding dresses. Now I am passing these skills to my great niece – who got her first sewing machine at age 5 and finished her first “quilt” at 7. We make doll clothes together. Life is a tapestry of memories that are sewn together both literally and figuratively. My first Pixie Fairie pattern was the Ivy Cape – made to reflect Merida’s cape in Brave!

The first thing I ever sewed was a bright orange dress. By time I got it finished I had out grown it. My arms couldn’t fit in the sleeves. Fifty years later I still at times make mistakes but it’s more likely making something too big. I made doll clothes for my barbies out of scraps of fabric. For the last 5 years I have been making dozens of doll clothes for my grand daughter and for me. I take better care of them. I like the challenge of trying to sew different fabrics

My first sewing project was when I was about 5. My mom stamped a floral pattern on 2 pillow cases and I embroidered them..took with me in the car and every spare moment I had. Over the next few years I did about 8 more pairs. Mom sewed all 8 of us kids’ clothing. She didn’t drive…she’d give me a color sample and I’d ride my bike to the local fabric shop in 1960 and bring sniplets of fabric home for her to choose…then go back and purchase. Then in 4th grade, crossed stitched a blue gingham apron in Girl Scouts..as a senior in high school ..1972 ..I sewed my first outfit…a corduroy brown/rust jumper…my fav to wear..within a few years I was sewing suits for myself..thanks to very detail instructions back then and a very helpful seamstress mother. I have stitched for a decorator, made all my draperies in our homes, and sewed countless corded pillows and cushions..but fav of all is counted cross stitch,

Don’t want to really show my age, but my first sewing project was a maxi skirt with elastic waist made in 7th grade home ec. class. Our teacher had us throw away our instructions so she could tell the class what to do. Looking back that was the biggest mistake ever made when teaching a child to read and follow directions. Got it made though, even think I wore it several times

The first sewing project I ever made was a sundress for myself when I was about 5 years old. My grandma and I went out to the fabric store to get all of the supplies, and we began sewing. It took a few hours (although it should’ve been a 30 minute dress), and then I decided to decorate it with glittery fabric paint. I can’t remember if I ever actually wore it, but I felt like a professional seamstress. From there, I have sewn about everything for dolls, and a few skirts for myself.

The first sewing project I made was a gingham checked scarf for 4-H. It was yellow and white and I had to cut it out by myself, straight stitch around it and then fray the edges to make a fringe. That scarf started my love of sewing. My mother was a wonderful seamstress and taught me everything she knew about sewing. The first machine I used was my mother’s treadle machine. I now have a Janome sewing/embroidery machine. I am 65 and I still love to sew.

The first sewing project I made was in high school. Mom & I chose a sheath dress. Simple we thought. We struggled with the pattern on the shoulders on how to attach them, it had a LINING. Needless to say the teacher was not happy with me when I had finished the dress. I followed the dress pattern, but the shoulders had a new idea. I put button holes & buttons on the shoulders. I failed the class. I have learned over the years how to turn out the shoulders & I have over the years given to daughters, grand & great ones doll clothes. My daughter still has her Chatty Kathy & Tatters.Yes! Teach I did learn something.
