The stiff courtly gowns that marked the earlier 18th century were discarded for simple peasant style dresses in the midst of the French Revolution as no one wanted to risk being associated with the French Aristocracy class. As the French Revolution subsided, Napoleon led a number of military campaigns to Italy, bringing back many statues and artifacts from Greco-Roman ruins. A revival of all things “classical” was stirred. The austere peasant dresses that marked the French Revolution were easily transformed to mimic the garments depicted on the Greek and Roman statues by raising the waistlines to just below the breasts. This distinctive characteristic would come to epitomize the Empire and Regency Periods.
The Bib-Front dress, also known as the Apron-Front, High Stomacher, Placket-Front, and Drop Front Dress, was one of the most popular styles of the Early Regency Period. Its simplicity, versatility, and built in support made it an ideal choice for both day dresses and evening gowns. Its popularity waned after 1813, but it remained in use until the end of the Regency Period in 1820.

This PDF Pattern by Thimbles and Acorns features a 1810 style Bib Front Regency gown with a front tab closure under the bib that sits just below the breast. This was also known as the Apron-dress, Drop-front gown, Placket-front dress, and Stomacher-front dress. This gown style consists of a bib-front that pulls up and attaches to a bodice. This pattern also displays the characteristic features of this period, including the pentagonal back on the bodice, a high-waist empire line, a narrow front skirt, a raised back skirt from which the back fullness flows from, and shoulders set back behind the modern shoulder-line.

The pattern begins with a lined bodice that attaches in the middle of the bust by ribbon. (Suggestions for other bodice closures are also discussed.) There are three options for bodice depth. Long, fitted sleeves reach to the lower hand, and are sewn in with the modern doll method (rather than being set-in sleeves). The sleeves are finished with the option of either a straight or frilled cuff. The soft skirt flows from the centre back and contains an inverted pleat along with eight small pleats. A slit on either side of the back of the skirt allows easy access for wearing the gown, while ties hold the back of the skirt in place. The gentle bib attached to the front of the skirt lifts up to cover the bodice, and this is held in place by basic closures like snaps.

This pattern is designed to fit 18-inch dolls such as American Girl® or Our Generation™. To be historically authentic, Regency Era undergarments (such as the chemise, stays, and petticoats) would be worn with this pattern. These pantalettes were designed as an added layer for warmth and were made with two separate legs and an open crotch. Until this time, shifts were the only undergarments women and girls wore, so the open crotch was a comfortable step for them as this type of undergarment was introduced. The pantalettes tie on at the waistline and are finished with three rows of pintucks. At the beginning of the Regency Era, ladies were still uncomfortable with the idea of wearing anything that resembled a trouser so pantalettes were generally not embellished and worn short enough to be hidden under the skirts. Later in the Regency Era, as pantalettes became more accepted, they would be more embellished and worn slightly longer than the skirts so they would peek under the hemline.

This PDF sewing pattern, by Thimbles and Acorns, is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl® and Other Similarly Sized Dolls.

Thimbles and Acorns Pattern #1800-01

Suggested Fabrics: Pantalettes, Shift, Stays Lining in light weight cotton, batiste, voile, linen, or silk. Around 1799, as Napoleon rose to power, he rejected all customs associated with the old regimes. He hoped that France would, once again, become a fashion leader and halted the import of British textiles and revived French lace making. Women were forbidden to appear at court in the same dress more than twice and he encouraged a return to simplicity and the silhouettes displayed on the statues of ancient Greece and Rome. Napoleon’s wife, Empress Josephine, was a fashion icon and a trendsetter that completely upended the standards of fashion and ushered in the styles that would define what became known as the Empire Period in France, the Regency Period in Britain, and the Federalist Period in the United States from about 1799 - 1820.

The Grecian Renaissance dress is based on a dress worn in a painting of the young Félicité Louise Julie Constance de Durfort that dates back to 1808. It is a simple empire waisted dress that is made from a lightweight sheer fabric for an almost ethereal look. To give it a little weight (and modesty) it is worn over a plain underdress that can be made in a matching or contrasting color. The dress is ankle length, so it can show off one’s pretty shoes and is edged at the bottom with two rows of ribbon that match the ribbon tie at the waistline. The Grecian style draped neckline is finished with a simple geometric embroidered edge. Short puffed sleeves and heavy gathers in back of the skirting give the otherwise understated silhouette a little added shape. Two small snaps in the back are used to fasten both the dress and underdress. As a finishing touch, instructions for a fringed shawl are included in the pattern.

This PDF sewing pattern by Thimbles and Acorns is designed to fit 18 inch dolls such as Doll of a Kind® and American Girl®.

Thimbles and Acorns Pattern #1800-02

Suggested Fabrics: Over Dress in sheer and other light weight fabrics such as chiffon, bridal net (not tulle), voile, lawn, batiste, gauze, or silk. The pocket was introduced in menswear – a much safer way to carry ones valuables as purses were an easy target for highwaymen. About the same time, women started wearing very wide heavy dresses that made it difficult to carry a purse. To accommodate these wider dress styles, their purses were exchanged for of pocket that was worn underneath their clothing. This pocket was a separate accessory that was not sewn into the dress, but tied on at the waist over the stays. At the end of the 18th century, however, there was a sudden and dramatic change in women’s dress styles. The wide stiff dresses that had dominated women’s fashions for nearly 300 years were replaced by trim high waisted dresses made with light flowing fabrics. Pockets were far too bulky to hide underneath this new style of dress, so brought purses back in the form of a reticule.

Reticule's were made in all shapes and sizes. This pattern is called a petal reticule because the header above the drawstring is made in the shape of petals which give the reticule the appearance of a blooming flower. It is fully lined and made with four panels. Each panel can be individually lined and then sewn together using the Palestrina stitch. This method creates a lovely effect along the seamlines.
