1970's Shirred Front Dress 18" Doll Clothes Pattern

  |

This dress has a center front section that has shirring at the center front bodice with fullness extending to the skirt.  There are two options for making the gathers in the center front panel.

  • The first option is to sew gathers and then sew a 1/8 to ¼ inch ribbon of choice or some other kind of embellishment along the gathers.
  • The second option is to gather the front section with elastic for a smocked effect on the bodice.

The neckline on the dress is square and the skirt is semi-full.  The dress can be made with ribbon ties that either tie in front of the bodice or in the back or with sashing that ties all the way around.  This pattern has the option to be made with or without the puff sleeves.  The puff sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and have elastic in a casing for the sleeve opening.  The sleeveless version is finished with facing around the armscye (armhole) edge.

Suggested Fabrics: Dress - woven cotton or cotton blends. Shrug - fleece, french terry, 2-way stretch medium knits

    Supplies Needed:

    • 1/3 yard of fashion fabric such as lightweight cotton or a cotton blend
    • ¼ yard of contrast fabric such as a cotton batiste or fabric similar in weight

    • 4 snaps (optional)
    • 18-inch length of braided elastic 3 mm wide or 1/8-inch-wide in white (optional); Note: It is easier to use the flat elastic shown in this section so using the corded elastic is optional.
