Regency Foundation Garments 18" Doll Clothes Pattern

  |

During the Regency Era, foundation garments were essential to add stability opacity to the light and filmy dresses that were the fashion.

This three piece collection of Regency foundation garments includes a two-piece short wrap stay that is lightly boned in the front with narrow cording. The two pieces cross in the front and back and ties in the front making it easy to put on without assistance. The adjustable shoulder straps tie behind the shoulder.

The stays are worn over a simple sleeveless chemise that is well suited for dresses with a lower neckline and short or sheer sleeves. The neckline is easily adjustable with a drawstring neckline.

A pair of pantalettes made in the historical two-piece design finishes the set. These pantalettes were designed as an added layer for warmth and were made with two separate legs and an open crotch. Until this time, shifts were the only undergarments women and girls wore, so the open crotch was a comfortable step for them as this type of undergarment was introduced. The pantalettes tie on at the waistline and are finished with three rows of pintucks. At the beginning of the Regency Era, ladies were still uncomfortable with the idea of wearing anything that resembled a trouser so pantalettes were generally not embellished and worn short enough to be hidden under the skirts. Later in the Regency Era, as pantalettes became more accepted, they would be more embellished and worn slightly longer than the skirts so they would peek under the hemline.

This PDF sewing pattern, by Thimbles and Acorns, is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl® and Other Similarly Sized Dolls.
