This pattern is just for the Highland Kilt, by Genniewren Designs. The Highland Kilt pattern teaches you how to make a traditional style Highland Kilt. The Highland Kilt is very different from a fashion kilt. Highland Kilts are traditionally hand sewn and can contain between 8 and 10 yards of fabric. In Scotland, Kilts are mainly worn by men and boys, but girls also wear Highland Kilts as part of the Highland Dance uniform for some of the official dances. For Highland dance, the apron always overlaps from left to right for both men and women’s kilts - there is no gender difference in fastening like there would be for a fashion kilt. A fashion kilt usually has fewer pleats as it contains less fabric, and the apron front will overlap on opposite sides for male and female kilts.

You will learn to pleat using traditional kilt pleating styles, so that the pleats on your kilt will be the correct width and style for your chosen fabric. Instructions are given for knife pleats or box pleats, and the pattern demonstrates how to pleat to "sett" (plaid pattern repeat), or to pleat to stripe. Example plaid fabrics are shown, along with information on measuring the sett, so that you can calculate exactly how much fabric you will need for the different pleating styles, just like a real professional Highland Kiltmaker.

The Highland Kilt has an apron, an under apron, and a pleated back section with traditionally steeked pleats. That means the pleats are trimmed to reduce bulk, and stitched down from the waist to the hips. It also has a narrow waistband, traditional strap and buckle fastenings, sporran holders at the back. The kilt also fastens with snaps or hook and look tape at the waistband.

This pattern is also available in a bundled package with the Highland Socks and the Ghillies patterns at a bundled discounted price.

Recommended Fabrics: For the kilt you will need miniature tartan fabric, preferably woven rather than printed as both sides of the fabric may be visible when the Highland Kilt is worn. Light weight tartans such as brushed cotton shirt fabric are ideal, as are lightweight mini tartan fabrics, as they will drape better than the thicker, heavier traditional woolen fabrics used for human clothing.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1/4 yard of 60” wide woven plaid fabric cut from the bolt (you need the full width of the fabric). If you cannot get 60" wide fabric then you will need to join the fabric, matching the plaid pattern accurately. If you wish to use printed tartan fabric, then this is OK for the kilt but it will not be any good for the fly plaid. The fly plaid is not always worn and is never worn for Highland Dance.
  • 1/4 yard of 44"wide woven cotton or polycotton fabric for the kilt lining
  • 7” x 4” of Lightweight fusible interfacing
  • 2.5” square of Vinyl/ leather or leatherette for the kilt straps
  • 2 x Small buckles to take 1/4” straps
  • 2 x Small sew on snaps OR 4” of 1/4" wide ultra thin hook and loop tape (both sides)
