Lucy Locket lost her pocket,
Kitty Fisher found it;
Not a penny was there in it,
Only ribbon round it.
Reading this rhyme as a child, I was always perplexed about how someone could possibly lose a pocket. I later learned that until the 19th century, pockets weren't sewn ladies clothing, but worn underneath petticoats as a separate bag. Although they were not a visible part of a lady's wardrobe, pockets were often cherished items that many ladies took the time to personalize and give as gifts. While some were made from the choicest parts of cast off clothing or pieced together from carefully selected fabric scraps, others were made specifically to match a particular outfit. These pockets were generally quite large and might be worn singly or as a matching set allowing a lady to easily carry whatever items she might want to keep handy.
