Your doll will be fashionably dressed at a picnic or a lawn party in this fitted pull-on dress. Make this now, and she can wear it all summer long. Add a little shrug or jacket and the dress will carry her into fall, as well.
The dress features a round neck on a princess-seamed bodice with a fitted waistband and elasticized straps and back, allowing it to pull on with no closure. The straps and the back bodice of this dress can be finished with different options. The back bodice shown on the aqua cover image features rows of casing with flat elastic, but may also be finished with shirring (made with elastic thread), as shown in the dark blue version below. The straps can be shirred, too, or can also be stitched with a single row of casing down the center for a ruffled effect on either side (as shown in dark blue), or a single row of casing on the neck side with an outside ruffle (shown in aqua), resulting in a very sweet look, especially when trimmed with narrow lace. The straps can be sewn to the back in two ways: straight down the sides (dark blue) or meeting in the center (aqua).
The knee-length full skirt has a retro vibe and the princess seams give just a little curve to the bodice. The bodice is fully lined and the waistband can be matching or contrasting for fun. Stitch up one or several for all your 18” dolls today.

Recommended Fabrics: Cotton, poly-cotton, rayon, seersucker, challis, cotton gauze, and similar woven fabrics in solids, ginghams, plaids, polka dots, stripes, and coordinating small-scale prints. Stunning in tie-dyes, eyelet, chambray, and border prints. Also suitable for knits or lightweight woven or knit denim.
Supplies Needed:
Main Fabric—With or Without Nap:
• ¼ yd fabric with nap for all views
• For View B, 1/8 yd contrasting fabric
Lining-All Views (it’s fun to use contrasting fabric for lining!):
• 1/8 yd fabric
Notions:
• 5 mm elastic thread OR 1/8”– ¼” soft flat elastic cut in 6” lengths for straps and 6 ½” lengths for back, depending on your doll’s chest and waist measurements
• High-quality matching polyester or rayon thread, depending on fabric choice
• New, sharp size 11/12 needle
• 6” x 2” scrap of interfacing for waistband* recommended for soft or sheer fabric
Optional Tools:
• Turning tool such as a metal sewing loop or loop turner (I use a wooden chopstick)
• Hemostats or tweezers
• Pinking shears for trimming tiny seam allowances
