1970s Winging-It Crocheted Vest 18” Doll Crochet Pattern

2 reviews   |

1970s Winging-It Crocheted Vest by Flossie Potter.  Anyone remember these? My Grandma Dorothy crocheted three of them for me, and I felt super cool when I wore them. So I designed a mini version to fit our 18" dolls such as American Girl®.

But there's a twist with this pattern.

What's different about it?
Besides MINIMAL INSTRUCTIONS, there is no gauge given for the vest. You can use what you have on hand without regard to hook size, yarn type, or tension.

Then how does it work?
Pattern guides for the fronts and back are given. Just make sure you crochet your filet stitch up to the guides' outlines, and the vest will fit on your 18" doll such as American Girl®.

The true test: My pattern tester lives about 2000 miles away from me, so we texted photos to each other and compared our work. Her hook was much larger than mine, and her yarn was heavier. She finished her vest in a jiffy, while I labored away into the night.

I knew that my stitches were tighter, but I didn't think they were THAT much tighter! She noticed that the back of her vest had 12 double-crochet bars across, and mine had 20. The holes between her bars were more like squares, and mine were more like rectangles. I puzzled over this for a long time, but it didn't hit me until the next day that I had told her to chain 2 between each double crochet bar, but I had only chained 1! (That's what I get for working when I'm tired!)

But the end result was that the vests were the SAME SIZE because our individual work fit the guides' outlines. The only difference was the appearance of the filet, making both of our vests unique!

So, use what you have, just "wing it," and make it your own!

A Customized Information Chart is included to note your gauge, hook, and yarn type for future vests!
