Although the lack of goods and the means to procure them meant a homesteaders wardrobe needed to be durable and serviceable, innovative women found ways to incorporate decorative details that not only added to the attractiveness of their clothing but also extended the life of their wardrobe as well. The three piece County Girl ensemble by Thimbles and Acorns shows how some of these carefully chosen features add charm to a very practical work dress. The dress itself features a lightly gathered bodice that allows room to move and grow. A flat collar not only dresses up the neckline, but protects it from wear and tear - a worn collar was easily replaced. The straight sleeves have a delicate puff and while they fit closely to the arms not to be an encumbrance, they are roomy enough to be pushed up out of the way when necessary. The skirt has two rows of growth tucks that can be let out to add length to a growing girls skirt or to fix a ragged hem. Side pockets are useful for a hard working girl to keep necessary items close at hand. The full apron features two decorative and handy drawstring pockets to keep belongings secure as well as side slits that allow easy access to the dress pockets. The sturdy slatted bonnet provides full coverage from the wind and the sun. It's flat design and removable slats make it easy to launder and press. The dress and apron close in the back with button, snap, or hook and loop fasteners. The classic design translates well into a more modern "present" look with a layered tier skirt and sleeveless bodice.

The Country Girl sewing pattern was a wonderful choice! Beautifully crafted and excellent instructions made this project so enjoyable that I purchased the 18" pattern the next week. I have made both, and the fit is perfect for all the little Lauras and Marys from the Little House books that bring imaginations to life for all my young friends.
After 20 years waiting for the PERFECT outfit for my handmade porcelain 14” doll, I finally found this beautiful pattern at the Pixie Faire website. The finest details are expressed in clear, step by step instructions along with a bonus....the historical background. The littlest of details with the side dress pockets, with the slits in the apron for access to these dress pockets and the very cute gathered front apron pockets. Loved the tucks for the “growing” girl’s dress! Perhaps the pattern could be marked a bit more difficult than Easy, but that’s only how I feel. Thank you Thimbles and Acorns for this specialized pattern.
Excellent instructions, perfect fit. I have made both the modern and herimage styles so cute.
This pattern is amazing! First time experience sewing a historical outfit - because of that I used some scrap fabrics expecting I'd make a bunch of mistakes, I was pleasantly surprised and I credit the pattern designer! Meticulous details that are very easy to follow along. Since I'm out of practice on making button holes I did not make those for the closures but did make them to hold the pocket ties on the aprons. I loved all the details - the apron pockets, deep pockets in the underdress - side slits in the apron. The history of the prairie dress is a nice treat !!
