Just in time for Valentine's Day! Show your doll some love by making her this fun little sweater. It goes together super fast, and all it takes is just five rectangles....
GIVEAWAY UPDATE: We have a winner! It's Lynda, who said her favorite Valentine's Day tradition is "to spend it with the one you love". Hard to go wrong with that Lynda! We'll be in touch via email soon. And thanks to everybody who entered!
You can use a stretch lace or a light knit -- but in any case, your fabric needs to stretch a little to be sure it'll fit right :)
Cut five rectangles:
One for the back, 4 3/4" x 8"
Two for the front, 4 3/4" x 3 1/4"
Two for the sleeves, 4 1/2" square
And, optionally, some little hearts out of coordinating fabric. :)
To hem the Center Front edges, press under one long edge of each front piece, twice, to form a double-turn hem. Topstitch in place.
Pin the fronts to the backs along the top edge. Make sure you have right sides together, and that the hemmed edges are facing each other. Stitch, and then zig-zag along the entire edge (including the un-stitched section of the back).
Press both seams to the back, and then also press under 1/4" along the un-stitched back edge. This will become the back neckline. Topstitch everything down nicely.
Next, hem one edge of each sleeve. If you're using a stripe like me, go ahead and hem one of the edges where the stripes meet it vertically -- that way the stripes will be oriented in a nice direction on the finished sweater.
You can also stitch your little heart applique down at this point too :)
Mark the middle of each sleeve with a pin.
Then, pin and sew the sleeves to the sweater body, matching the pin to the shoulder seam. Don't forget right sides together :) Zig zag over this seam when you're done.
Fold the sweater in half at the shoulders, and pin and stitch the underarm/side seams.
Finally, hem the lower edge. Give the sweater a good press, and then style it into your doll's wardrobe!
Thanks everybody, and have fun with this!
For Pixie Faire,
Melinda
My favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is eating out at a fancy restaurant with my family!
This sweater is so cute! Thank you for the tutorial (and pattern!)!
My favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is to prepare treat bags for my kids and husband. They really do enjoy getting this on that special day… Which reminds me I have to take care of that quickly if I want to be able to do it this year again!
Our tradition is I have Valentine bags that I made for our children and now our grandchildren I fill them with treats. Candy small toys, jewelry . Then for dinner everything is red! Or in red sauce! We love having the time together!
In grade school in the 50’s we got the penny candy paper bags, decorated with paper doilies, crayons, glitter, etc. Taped to the bottom of the chalk board they were ready for everyone to walk around the room and put in the valentines we had for all our classmates. I still remember those precious valentines.
My favorite Valentine tradition is to go out for ice cream with my family. I remember doing it as a little girl with my parents, and it has been continued through 30 years of my marraige. My daughter has grown up with it as well. Next year, she’ll go off to college; but I bet she’ll keep our family practice going in the years to come. I love it. Your sweet Heart on My Sleeve Sweater is so adorable. I’m going to have to whip up one tomorrow for a little girl that I know at a nursing home that I visit. She’s going to go crazy about it. Thanks for the free pattern. You should smile when you know that it will bring her joy. God bless.
When I was in elementary school in the 1950’s, we’d decorate paper bags and write our names on them. Them we’d line them all up on the chalk tray below the chalkboard. The night before we would have done up all the valentine cards we were going to give to our classmates. The next day we’d just go along and drop the valentines into the appropriate bags.
oh how cute is this…my niece just got Grace Thomas last week, this would be perfect. Thank you so much for all the good patterns and tutorials!!
In recent years we celebrate @ home w/friends visiting here for the winter with pizza, beer/wine, followed with a fun night of Sequence, girls vs. guys, with lots of laughs & chocolate candy, of course! LOVE this sweet little sweater and may whip one up tonight — sooo cute — TFS!!!
My favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is celebrating my wedding anniversary. This year it is the Golden Wedding Anniversary – 50 years. Will be celebrating with children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. My little granddaughters would love this adorable sweater. Thanks for the give a way!
I send valentine cards to older single men and women in my church.
Celebrating the birth of my grandmother. She isn’t with us anymore but, the day is still all about her and we like it that way.
For my Valentine’s Day tradition, I like to make a red and white dinner. It can be anything at all, as long as it is red and white. I make the dinner rolls into heart shapes and the main course usually contains tomatoes, but really anything goes. Of course chocolate treats have a touch of red and white on them to make them correct.
Eating pizza for lunch with my hubby. 9 years ago on Valentine’s Day we found out I was pregnant with our daughter. I was able to get in to the doctor that day, after we had the official “doctor’s confirmation”, we celebrated afterwards with pizza for lunch.
My favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is that, in college, I used to dress up as goth girl in a general protest to all the lovey-doveyness. It was always still a romantic, “black heart” theme though – just with black hearts and black lace and such…like a dark romance, as well as a silly protest (since I was always single)! When I finally did date, the guy thought it was so funny he asked me to continue the tradition. Single again this year…we will see what happens!
My favourite Valentine’s Day tradition is making pink jello flavoured Valentine cookies(pretty and delicious) with my granddaughter.
after my husband goes to bed, I quietly go into the kitchen to make his favorite chocolate peanut butter balls. I then make a toothpick flag with a cute little saying on it and stick it in one of the ball and then place them in the refrigerator so he sees them as soon as he opens it in the morning. This never fails to get me anything that I would like for myself :)
My favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is candy, candy, and more candy.
