18th Century Pocket 18" Doll Clothes Pattern

1 review   |

This 18th-century pocket design is fully lined, has a slit opening, and ties on with a drawstring. It can be made with plain or pieced fabric, or embroidered to create a special keepsake. Use the embroidery template provided, create your own design, or use one of the machine embroidery designs on Pixie Faire.

Genniewren Floral Spray Free ME Design and the Frog Princess Fashions Precious Pinafores ME designs both work perfectly with this design!

Lucy Locket lost her pocket,
Kitty Fisher found it;
Not a penny was there in it,
Only ribbon round it.

Reading this rhyme as a child, I was always perplexed about how someone could possibly lose a pocket. I later learned that until the 19th century, pockets weren't sewn ladies clothing, but worn underneath petticoats as a separate bag. Although they were not a visible part of a lady's wardrobe, pockets were often cherished items that many ladies took the time to personalize and give as gifts. While some were made from the choicest parts of cast off clothing or pieced together from carefully selected fabric scraps, others were made specifically to match a particular outfit. These pockets were generally quite large and might be worn singly or as a matching set allowing a lady to easily carry whatever items she might want to keep handy.
