Many people think of the Volendam costume when they think of Holland. This is the costume which is replicated on all kinds of labels under 'Dutch Maid', with the peaked and winged cap. In fact, the costume is only worn in the one village and is not representative of the Netherlands as a whole.
There are three variants that are worn which is why you may see different images and they do not look the same. There is the everyday and young girl’s, the Sunday go to market and the special occasions costumes. The most often seen one is the last mentioned one and the costume that this pattern is based on.
This PDF pattern includes 5 pieces - Double Bib, Skirt, Black jacket, apron (2 options) and peaked cap.
To complete your outfit you can make a Edelkraal or Blood Coral necklace.

My use of this pattern was mostly for the Dutch folk hat. I had designed my own costume but needed the hat to complete the outfit. I found the pattern exactly what I needed. My suggestion would be to use a heavy interfacing on the body of the hat to give it slight stiffness. Therefore I had to make it twice to get the look I wanted. As instructed it is to soft to stand up.
I just made this in blue Delft-inspired colors to donate for our school's auction and it is just adorable! I am an advanced beginner sewist and the only part that was a challenging was the jacket, getting the little V-shaped slits to turn right-side out and not pucker (took cutting them literally right up to the stitches - that did the trick) - also clipping the corners and pressing are very important. The directions and pictures are excellent and easy to follow. I highly recommend it if you are looking for an adorable little Dutch outfit! It's so cute!!
Well written, so cute
I have not had the chance to sew yet. I have previewed the patternand it is everything I wanted. I am positive it will be fine. I can't find material with tiny flowers for 18 inch dolls so that is my hold-up. There are some patterns out there that are wrong. I am very anxious to showcase your pattern as it is correct so I want to do it super correct. Thank you so much.
