Singing in the Rain with woven and nylon

I was sent my niece’s beloved broken Betsey Johnson umbrella with the plea to “make something from it.” I added interfacing to it and found some coordinating woven scraps and thought it would work. The pattern mentioned that woven fabric could be used in place of vinyl but I only found it specifically mentioned one place in the directions, without any photos to help me understand the directions. I’ve only been sewing a few years but I’m pretty good on the beginner patterns; however, this one was a challenge for me specifically because of the woven fabric. I managed to get it all together with a few tweaks here and there and love the result, but I would definitely try using vinyl next time to make life easier!

Vinyl Singing in the Rain

This is a super cute raincoat and hat. I have been sewing a good portion of my 73 years and would not rate this as confident beginner if you are using vinyl over fabric as instructed. It made the fabric pretty stiff. I found this hard to manipulate - but not impossible - especially the hat. Using a pen I traced the pattern onto the fabric as close as possible. Then I was able to cover all pattern pieces with vinyl and didn't need to buy more. I made the mistake of using a fabric adhesive ( I guess its different than fabric glue) which, when dried, left wet marks on the pockets. Had to cut out new pockets. I found that using Quitters Tape or Wonder Tape worked better for me. I used Wonder Tape in the seams and sewed thru it. When making the cape match it up with the shoulders of the back section before sewing the cape. You want the pleat to be the right size to lie flat onto the back. Topstitching is difficult but helps everything lie flat if you are using the vinyl. The hat was very tough to sew using the vinyl because of it not being pliable. I hand basted it first and it helped a bit. The coat turned out nice but I wanted to make 4 coats for 4 granddaughters. Wish I could find an easier fabric that would still look like a raincoat.
