Button Front Mini Skirt 18" Doll Clothes pattern

23 reviews   |

A new classic from Liberty Jane® - The Button Front Mini Skirt designed to fit 18 inch dolls such as American Girl®. This cute button front skirt is the perfect go-to piece for every wardrobe.  The button front design can be sewn as functional or as a faux look. The skirt is designed with four front panels and 3 back panels, which adds interest to the original classic denim mini skirt design. The skirt front has a flat waistband while the back has enclosed elastic which makes it an easy on and off piece. The side seams of the waistband are ingeniously sewn together with enclosed seams for a clean and professional look. Bring out the seaming details with contrast thread or keep it matching for a more dressed up version. There are so many looks you can achieve with your fabric and thread choices!

Suggested fabrics for this PDF sewing pattern include: denim, twill, canvas, corduroy, velveteen, faux leather or suede. It is important to note a 1/4” button is highly suggested in order to achieve the right scale and ‘real clothes’ look. If you are having trouble finding small buttons, look also at your local craft store for beads that can look like buttons. This is a great trick when using a faux button closure!

Bonus distressing tip/techniques included!

Supplies Needed:
-1/4 yard mid-weight fabric (denim, twill, corduroy, faux leather, suede, leather)
-5 inch piece of 3/8” elastic
-5 - 1/4” buttons (or metal studs, brads, beads, etc)

Button Front Mini-Skirt

I've had this pattern for a while and procrastinated on making it because I thought it would be really hard. It wasn't! it is very detailed, but not difficult. I dreaded the buttonholes- the next to the last step- because I'm not good at making them even on regular-sized clothes. After doing a few practice ones, I figured out that if I marked the starting point with a thread tack instead of white pencil, I could see it MUCH better. All the little button holes turned out evenly spaced and the same size! Hallelujah! The skirt fits really snugly so I might add a little to the side seams when I make it again. (In the photo, the row of buttons looks curved because I didn't have the waistband on the skirt pulled around enough.) I really like this little skirt!

Perfect!

This jean style skirt is absolutely perfect. It’s really not hard at all, but the details are wonderful. I made 5 of them ... and made a couple changes as I went. First time I sewed the front together, but that seam is difficult because of the small size ... realized that the buttons are plenty to hold the front together without overlapping the panel and machine sewing over original stitching, so didn’t do it on the others. Don’t be afraid of the buttonholes ... I did them on one, but they are very time consuming and hard to get even. On the other skirts, I just sewed the buttons on without buttonholes, and they look fine. The fit is a little slim, and makes it difficult to tuck in a t-shirt ... I might add a 1/4” to each side seam if I planned an outfit with a tucked in shirt. I usually don’t like too short skirts and dresses, but I liked the length on this one. Already thinking of other ways to use this cute pattern!

Authentic mini jeans skirt

The skirt is absolutely wonderful! Directions were easy to follow and the finished product is adorable, very authentic. I used some old jeans so the look is worn, and then used gold topstitching thread for the accent. Wow! Now I am going to make the Liberty Jane peplum top to compliment the skirt. Excellent pattern!

Adorable details

I made this from chambray and it was very quick and easy. Love the details on the front but the easy on/off of the elastic back.
