Yacht Club Dress 18" Doll Clothes

130 reviews   |

It’s a fact: whether your 18” doll is one of the privileged few to own a yacht, or whether she just aspires to attend parties on board one someday, she’ll need the right dress - one with all the class and snappiness of the yacht itself, and preferably one with a distinctly nautical flair. We at Melody Valerie Couture think our new Yacht Club dress will fit the bill perfectly.

This dress features flat-felled seams (a traditional technique used in fine shirtmaking), which provides a clean interior finish without requiring a lining. Add snappy, streamlined styling and six stylish buttons to close down the front, and you have a light, sturdy, and unencumbered dress -- perfect for an afternoon on the yacht!

This dress PDF pattern will work well in cotton seersucker, lightweight sateen, or cotton lawn; or, for a fun Americana look, try a lightweight, non-stretch denim-look fabric.

Supplies Needed:

-1/3 yard main fabric (scraps of fabric for contrast if desired)

-6 - 1/4” wide buttons

-6 small (size 4/0) snaps

-15” ribbon to enclose waist seam

-matching thread

Cute Dress ... Weird Construction

The finished dress was really cute ... it’s a different style from so many basic sleeveless dresses that all look alike. I liked that the inside seams were nicely finished, and the edged placket in the front is a technique I can see using other places. The dress fit both my AG and OG dolls nicely, and with the front opening, easy to dress for young ones, without hair getting in the way. (I used a Velcro and fake button closure - I’m not fond of sewing buttons over snaps.) My only issue with this pattern is the flat felled seams. I’ve never seen flat felled seams made in such a complicated manor ... much easier (and same result) if you just line up the edges, stitch the seam, then trim one side before finishing, instead of trying to line one piece up with the edge 1/4” away from the edge of the matching piece! I always try and follow directions exactly as written the first time (because there’s always a different way to do things!), but I’ll definitely make some adjustments to the techniques the next time. (The comments that mentioned the dress not fitting could possibly have lined up the seam edges in a more traditionally method for flat felled seams, which would have lost 1/4” on each seam.)

Loved this pattern, I changed up the skirt to create a shirt from the dress, I fully plan to make this pattern again as shown. Thank you for such a detailed well written pattern.

Fabulous Yacht Dress pattern!

I really enjoyed making this dress that is as beautiful inside as it is outside. Finishing all the seams makes me feel like I made something special.
