The most meaningful gift I made for someone was a complete surprise to me. I just thought I was doing a favor for a friend. I mended and resized her clothes for her. She told me years later that someone investing their time in her encouraged her to care about herself more. She went to seminary and become a minister. When she told me I was floored. I had no idea that doing a service for someone might have more meaning to them than just the results of the deed itself. It became a blessing to me.

I made the dress out of simple cotton polyester, trimmed in eyelet lace, and had small embroidered flowers along the trim. She was very thrilled with this dress, and she looked adorable in it!

When I was a teen I made my younger sister a lot of doll clothes for her fashion dolls. She loved them. When she got married she packaged the clothes and dolls up and they moved with her. She said she hoped one day she would have children who could play with them. Moving the clock ahead quite a few years her grandchildren now play with those dolls and clothes. I am so happy she has valued them and that they are still being enjoyed through the generations.

I had to purchase it from Great Britain and he was so touched that someone respected his pride in his heritage and cared enough to go to all that trouble.

The most meaningful gift I ever made was a handkerchief. When I was nine I convinced my mom to help me make a handkerchief. I picked out the design, it was two layers. On one side it was white and the other had a cherry print. It also had a sheer ruffle around the edge. I hand embroidered two cherries in the corner of the white side. She helped me sew it together. The whole time she had no idea that it was a birthday present for her! So on her birthday when she opened it up she was so surprised and still loves it to this day.

For example, I made my daughter’s wedding bouquet when she decided the day before her wedding that maybe she should have one! I fixed up a used Kanani and made her some clothes and accessories for my friend’s six year old daughter last year. She loooved the doll. She gets to borrow her aunt’s original PC Kirsten, but she has to have original braids in place etc. I felt really happy to see her getting her own doll whose hair she can imperfectly brush and get to bring on adventures. I used an Eden Ava pattern that I bought here to make Kanani’s Hawaiian sundress.

Since I sew mostly doll clothing, one of the most meaningful gifts I have sewn is a real fur vest and headband made from a grandmother’s fur jacket she had altered. I used every bit of the leftover scraps to make the vest and headband for her to give to her granddaughter.

The most meaningful gift I ever made was a dress for my daughter. At the time I did not realize that it was a gift until later. My daughter was about 12 and she wanted me to make her one of my 1950"s dress patterns, but it was an adult size and she was 12 and thin. So I altered the pattern to fit her and can I say did it fit her. It was fun to make, we picked out the black and white gingham together. She was there every step of the dress making process. She loved the dress so much that she wore it all the time at least 3 times a week. This dress wearing went on like this for several years. I loved seeing her in this dress. She felt so beautiful and original in this dress. Every time she wore the dress people commented on it or how nice she looked. Over the years I saw how this little dress built her confidence in her self. I think that was the most meaningful thing I ever made.

(I’m fifteen) It is the outfit Sophie is wearing on the cover of the second book. The most meaningful gift I made was a memory bear I made and donated to the Ronald McDonald House teddy bear auction. The RMHC was a big part of my life growing up as my sister was born with retinoblastoma and lost her eye to it. We spent many days at the RMH and the bear I made was a pirate bear, dressed to look like my sister the Halloween she had her eye removed (hence the pirate with a patch over it’s eye). My sister, aunt and I attended the banquet together that year and shared tears. Also my aunt outbid everyone so the bear is still in our family.
