2026 Sewing With Cinnamon & Friends A Look Ahead!

SWC + Design Academy Reimagined = A Year-Long Sewing Masterclass

Twelve principles. Twelve months. One unforgettable year of growth.

In 2026, Cinnamon Miles is opening the vault and teaching the Design Academy like never before—fifteen years after she first published the landmark series that inspired thousands of sewists worldwide. This is a complete, modernized re-imagining, blending Liberty Jane’s iconic design principles with today’s techniques, challenges, and creative opportunities.

And this year, there’s more:
Historical fashion deep dives with guest instructor Shari Fuller. Designer spotlight showcases. Sew Powerful Purse crossover projects. And a brand-new challenge every month.

If you loved the original Design Academy, you haven’t seen anything yet! We're bringing the full course into the Sewing With Cinnamon membership. If you're already a subscriber, then you're in! If not, we invite you to join SWC today so you can participate too!

What You’ll Experience All Year Long

✨ Monthly Design Principles — Taught by Cinnamon

Each month unwraps one of the 12 Design Academy principles—Proportion, Focal Point, Rhythm, Color, Minimalism, and more—revisited, expanded, and demonstrated with beautifully detailed Liberty Jane examples.

👜 Sew Powerful Purse-Flap Project

Every principle becomes a hands-on purse-flap challenge. From appliqué to FPP, EPP, embroidery, colorwork, fabric painting, and couture techniques—your flap becomes a design canvas with real-world purpose.

📜 Historical Fashion With Shari Fuller

Shari brings her knowledge of 1700s fashion, colonial-era silhouettes, and the design traditions leading into America’s 250th anniversary. Every month, she interprets the same principle through her Thimbles & Acorns and Keepers Dolly Duds lens.

📸 Monthly Community Show & Tell

Celebrate your progress through monthly reveals:

  • Doll garments, sewing challenges, outfit combinations, and more! Each month we'll challenge you with a theme tie-in!

🎉 Featured Designer Guest Highlights Too!

Get up close and personal with a select group of Pixie Faire independent designers! Each month we'll be highlighting a designer and her brand with an in-depth Q&A and showcase of their work as it corresponds to the specific month's theme.

2026 Sewing With Cinnamon – 12-Month Course Calendar

Theme: The 12 Principles of Design Academy — 15 Years Later

Each month follows the four-part format:

  1. Part 1 — Cinnamon: Deep Dive Into the Original Design Principle
Revisiting the Liberty Jane lesson, showing updated examples, techniques, and a monthly project challenge.

  2. Part 2 — Sew Powerful Crossover
Cinnamon creates a purse-flap design using the same principle (appliqué, FPP, EPP, embroidery, painting, textile manipulation, etc.).

  3. Part 3 — Historical Fashion With Shari Fuller
Shari presents a colonial-era / 1700s example illustrating the same design principle, using patterns from Thimbles & Acorns or Keepers Dolly Duds.

  4. Part 4 — Community Project Reveal
Show-and-tell of member submissions: dolls, purse flaps, quilt blocks (March), and Sew-A-Thon prep (September).

MONTH-BY-MONTH PLAN

JANUARY – Principle 1: PROPORTION

(Here's an example of how the 4-part series will roll out each month)

Part 1 — Cinnamon:

    • Re-teach proportion using updated Liberty Jane examples (jacket lengths, skirt balance, scale of print vs. garment).

    • Community Challenge: “Design a Proportion-Perfect Outfit” - draw it, sew it, share it.

Part 2 — Sew Powerful Purse Flap:

    • Use 1/3 vs 2/3 ratio for flap design layout.

    • Possible Techniques: two-tone flap, off-center appliqué, bold color-blocking.

Part 3 — Shari (1700s Style):

    • Colonial stays & petticoat proportions.

    • How silhouette ratios defined the entire outfit in the 18th century.

Part 4 — Reveal:

    • First look at the year’s design books; proportion sketches & purse flaps.

The remaining month by month topics include a deep dive into each design principle:

  • FEBRUARY – Principle 2: FOCAL POINT

  • MARCH – Principle 3: RHYTHM / REPETITION

  • APRIL – Principle 4: HARMONY / UNITY

  • MAY – Principle 5: COLOR

  • JUNE – Principle 6: FABRIC MATTERS

  • JULY – Principle 7: SURPRISE

  • AUGUST – Principle 8: WAISTLINES

  • SEPTEMBER – Principle 9: HOMAGE

  • OCTOBER – Principle 10: MINIMALISM

  • NOVEMBER – Principle 11: DISTRESSING & EMBELLISHMENT

  • DECEMBER – Principle 12: SEWING TECHNIQUE & ORIGINAL PROJECTS

I realize as I’m aging, I’m forgetting so much. I’m hoping this course, which will be my second time thru, will help reignite the passion. I really love sewing and making doll clothes. Some of my girls really need new clothes!!!

I wasn’t able to access these classes the first time, but now I’m looking forward to checking them out this time around. While I may not be from the US, I’m sure many of the articles/garments could be slightly revamped to match historical garb from my own country (we do share a Northern border with the US after all, so many may be similar). It will be interesting to see how they relate :)

I am wondering if this is for purse flaps only?

This class sounds interesting. I’m an amateur sewist who loves fashion on a small scale basis. I love all the patterns that I have gotten from Pixie Faire. The process of finding the right pattern and then picking the perfect fabric makes it all fun.

Oh this would be such an amazing thing to be involved in. However due to my health, I have not been sewing and could not devote the time needed to do this.

I have been wanting to join for quite some time and decided this year I would jump in . I am so excited about learning new techniques and studying the lessons. Historical costuming inspires me and I look forward to getting more familiar with different eras and am excited to see more and more historical patterns being developed by so many wonderful designers. Can’t wait to get started!!!

I am excited too. I am limited because I don’t do social media- just the youtube.
If you get Mary Jane Farm Magazine, I was published in Dec/Jan 2026 issue with an article under Reader’s Write on page 80 and I mentioned the “Sew Powerful Purse” program in my Bio with the hope readers get curious and we recruit more seamstresses!

I am new to the designing end of the doll clothes. Don’t know anything about the different fabrics and designs of the past; but I am glad to be able to learn about these. This will be an interesting year for sure.

I am looking forward to the course as I did it a few years ago. Seeing the updated material will be interesting. I am going to do a bit of research and see if I can adapt the patterns to make clothes for the 1700’s that would have been worn by Canadian ladies. I may even look at clothing worn by Acadian women who resided in Nova Scotia during that era.

This course sounds like a real refresher of creativity. Have enjoyed your classes in the past and look forward to sewing along with the group this coming year. I appreciate that you are celebrating the colonial era for the 250th anniversary of our country.

After nearly 6 years I only had a few lessons to complete of the design academy. So I am excited to see where this year may take me as I go thru it more thoroughly. And add to my sketch book.

Have been with SWC since the beginning. Learned so much. Jazzed about your 2026 plan.
Love fashion history and how fashion evolved thru the centuries and eras.

Maybe you could create a new series focusing on individual fashion designers? Doing a deep dive into their work, signature style(s), and how to translate that to doll sized sewing. Would definitely be interested,

I was considering having a yr off from swc this year for various reasons but this has convinced me to stay another year. I was never able to afford the original course so very grateful for this. I don’t really get into the historical and U.S holiday themes as I’m not in the U.S. and wish there was a little more modern clothing and universally applicable content, but there’s always opportunities to learn. So, very excited!!

I’m really looking forward to revisiting these topics, since I use them constantly in my own pattern making! And I’m especially happy to about the purse flap tie-in projects; my doll sewing group is making SewPowerful purses as our charity and the ladies enjoy having new ideas. Plus more historical fashion, especially 18th century! Hurray, a favorite for me! Sounds like a year full of purpose and growth.

Same story different teller, I signed up for the original version and failed to follow through. Aged, retired, moved on; life happens. I am looking forward to reapplying myself to the class, even I do not feel like a designer, only a sewist, but I love it. See you in the coming months.

I took the course, I think, the second time you offered it. Lots of information. So many life events have happened since then, including retiring. I hope to be able to slow down a bit and revisit the book again and enjoy going through slowly this time.

It sounds cool. I was never able to afford the design academy. Though, I worry about being able to design. I can’t draw and don’t know how to draw designs.
Everyone sounds excited to celebrate the USA’s anniversary I’m not at all interested in celebrating your country’s anniversary, as I’m not a US resident and historical US fashion isn’t an interest of mine. The rest of it is interesting.

Like Mollie I bought the original design academy but did not follow through with it. I am hoping with this 12 month structured class I will do better.
I would like to be able to sew more for the dolls I have which are 13 to 14 inch – like the Ruby Red Fashion Friends and Dianna Effner’s Little Darlings. Unfortunately many of the patterns do not come in that size.

I’m very excited for this! I bought the original design academy but only picked around at the lessons. It will be nice to have a little motivation doing it along with the group in a structured year long class!
Plus celebrating 250 years of historical fashions?!?! I’m in!
