Sewing With Pleats - Tutorials and A Practice Project

Hi Everyone! This week I have a PDF handout for you, you can grab it in the SWC Bonuses Section. It's an excerpt from my Sewing book and includes a step by step tutorial for forming knife pleats, box pleats, and a fun practice project incorporating the knife pleat.

My best advice with pleats is. - practice, practice, practice! Play around with a few of the methods shown in the videos last week to determine which pleating method works for you. You can use both knife pleats and box pleats to add interest and variety to many different types of designs!

Week Two Task:

  • Try out the box pleat. Look for a design that includes this type of pleat to practice.
  • Take a look at the practice project included in the PDF. It shows how to insert a pleated accent strip into an existing pillowcase. How else do you think you could use this type of design accent? Look for a way to incorporate this into a clothing design - like a skirt accent or maybe a dress waistband? The choice is yours - have fun with adding pleats!
  • Jump over the SWC Facebook Group for conversation and project sharing.

Next Tuesday - Part 3: We'll go deeper with hands-on demonstrations.

Be sure to watch the videos posted last week, there were several posted. I've included them down at the bottom of this post as well, just in case :)

The PDF pleating tutorials are no longer in the SWC Bonuses section. I realize this is an older topic, but still very important! Is there a way to get the PDF’s?

Just wanted to say thank Cinnamon for the BOGO Friday I may not get patterns every BOGO but I like being able to get two patterns that I want to make and not get a pattern that I may not ever make. Thank you.

The Vintage Skirt pattern hack from October 2018 would be a great way to practice pleats also. On the pillowcase practice sheet, under the picture for step 3., you didn’t say to sew the pleated piece to the pillowcase. I know that you would assume it to be sewn at that time, but looking at it from a beginners standpoint that it should be stated. I also have a question about the free list you have for the patterns. Do you have, or could you make a copy in a PDF file since my computer can’t open Office Files? I enjoy SWC tutorials and can’t wait to see what’s coming next. Thank you so much!

Wow! you make things so much easier. I am enjoying what I have learned and the results are fantastic. Unsure what method yet that I will use to make the pleats. Thank you Cinnamon.
