The kirtle and smock were key components of the Renaissance wardrobe as they could be worn alone as a day dress or as a foundation garment underneath a formal gown. The Renaissance Faire Side Laced Kirtle includes a square necked smock with optional blackwork embroidery at the neckline and cuffs. It fastens with the back with a single snap or button closure and is finished with a subtle asymmetrical hem. The Kirtle laces up each side with three sets of eyelets and fastens at the shoulders with two sets of eyelets. The two piece detachable sleeves allow the full smock sleeves to spill out at the shoulders and elbows in classic style and the traditional coif rests securely on the back of the head to complete the historic Renaissance look. As an added bonus, make a spunky present day version. The smock features elbow length sleeves and a slit asymetrical hemline that is topped with a kirtle that has been updated with a two-piece A-line asymmetrical skirt.
This PDF sewing pattern is sized to fit American Girl® and other similarly sized dolls. It is also available in a bundled version on Pixie Faire with the 16" A Girl For All Time doll pattern.

This is a wonderful pattern full of great information. Fits perfectly too.
As always, it's a beautiful design, and a history lesson. If you look at the finished product, you'll see a very detailed design. Probably a bit intimidating. But this one was fairly easy, and surprisingly fast. (Maybe it's fast because I liked it so much, I have made three) Look at the detail on the Tudor sleeves and neckline. It's called "Blackwork". I always like a pattern which pushes me to do something new. I loved adding the embroidery, which was done using the built-in stitches on my regular sewing machine. I also learned how to sew machine eyelets with my sewing machine. And I used metal eyelets on two of the "Present" kirtles. I found the 1/8" metal eyelets with a hammer gave really good results. The "Past" Kirtle is so beautiful with the head coif. My "Present" dresses look like aprons -- one, a velvet with embellishments, and the other, a baking apron. Both very cute, and unique. I can't wait to see what the expanded Tudor collection is going to look like!
Thimbles and Acorns has done it again! An exciting new pattern in an exciting new era. You can dress your doll up as Anne Boleyn or dress her up to take to the Renissance Faire or maybe even as Merida from Once Upon a Time! The dress can have sleeves, or no sleeves and there is even a stylish modern option if you don't want to make a period dress. You won't be disappointed in this pattern.
