Our Finnish Cultural Center hosts Tori in September. It is part social gathering, part cultural fair with traditional contests exhibits and entertainment, part marketplace. I would like to learn more about the Finnish Dancers’ traditional costumes by trying to reproduce them for dolls.

One of my favorite cultural traditions is going to my parents’ hometown in Mexico in August. There is a celebration in honor of the town’s patron, Our Lady of Assumption. The celebrations are from August 1-16 with the main day being the 15th. Every day, a different group of people (the bakers, the aguacateros (avocado orchard owners), etc.) sponsor the celebrations in the church and in the town plaza. The whole town is there and there’s live music, delicious food, rides and games for the little ones. Everyone has an amazing time.

I encourage my children to read a different book each night in December as a family and discuss ways to bring the true spirit of Christmas into their homes and lives. Our future daughter in law has been in Japan for 12 months out of the last 2 years performing at Disney Tokyo. We have Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, Christmas Eve supper, Christmas stockings for all ages, southern Hoppin’ John (black eyed peas and rice) for good luck every New Year’s Day, and “the wearing of the green” on St. Patrick’s Day along with Corned beef, stew or boiled dinner and Irish soda bread. Also, we honor Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day by flying my father-in-laws burial flag, my hubby is the oldest son so we have it for now.

I’d like to see a pattern for vintage style day clothing of Scottish/Irish girls, not the kilt or dance costumes which you already have—what they wore day to day for chores and for social.

A family tradition we celebrate is the opening of our homes especially during the Thanksgiving-Christmas season. There always guests besides family sharing our tables.
I would like to see more Native American patterns for both boy and girl dolls. We have 15" and 18" boy and girl dolls currently being loved and played with. Patterns with authentic suggestions for beading/decorations for different tribes.

One family tradition is from my Great-Grandfather who purchased a piece of pottery that is a sleigh. He would place cuts of pine and other trees around it and place tiny presents in the sleigh. Then my grandfather did the same. My grandfather gave the sleigh to my mother who did the same thing but added a Santa Claus and any reindeer she could find. I now have the sleigh, and this year found a Santa ornament that looked just like the Santa ornament that my mother used, (which has since crumbled) . I got some reindeer at the dollar store and transformed them with felt and accessories. Placed greenery around, and, now I have what my mother and other generations did at the start of the Christmas season!

I’m not so sure that is a cultural tradition as much as a family tradition, one book we read came from my great grandmother and is almost 100 years old! Pixie Faire has such a wonderful selection of cultural pattern already, but if more Mexican or Hispanic traditions were available it would be fun.

This is a cultural tradition, but is a family tradition. On Christmas eve everyone gets to choose a dish to have at a Christmas Eve buffet we eat prior to Christmas Eve church service. For the kids, this will become their Christmas dinner, as they get to pick and choose whatever they want whenever they want (between bites of candy and playing with new toys) We then fix an adult meal for the adults to share, with adult conversation. The kids are happy, the adults are happy, and this tradition has now been passed down through the generations to be a family cultural tradition!

We join hands while the blessing is being said… I would like to see a pattern for the AGD choir robe. Practice of religious prayers and worship should be brought back to America and allowed in public places.

My cultural tradition is a little strange. First I hide a Christmas ornament on the Christmas tree that looks like a dill pickle and the grandchildren have to find it. Who ever finds it gets a gift card. Than we have potatoes,pork ribs and sauerkraut for the meal. My Mother started this and when she passed away the family named me the grandma to make it.

Ours is a culture of family. We have sooo many traditions. Annual hayride-caroling, popcorn cakes to friends and neighbors, lots of lights and decorations, grandparent night, the Christmas orange story and everything having to do with Christ and his life. Love Christmas!
