Online Fabric Sourcing Chat One

Do you fear shopping online for fabric? Join us for this live chat where we talk about the things we do to solve common challenges and successfully purchase fabrics online!

I'm joined by both Shari and Donna, over zoom, for a 20 minute discussion. This is the first of three chats we'll be doing for this series. We hope you enjoy it and it helps you to feel more confident when shopping online too!

My best suggestion for overcoming the "touch & feel" challenge is to create a swatch book (or textile kit). You'll fine a PDF download available so you can make your own. It's in the SWC Bonuses section.

Looking for a resource for fabric swatches? Here are a few:

1. Vogue Fabrics has a swatch club you can subscribe to.

2. Mood Fabrics is the site that I got my swatches from, they no longer have a swatch club subscription, but they do offer swatches for $1.50 or they let you add them for free when ordering other items.

The site we mentioned with the video clips for the various fabrics is Fabric Wholesale Direct. Even if you don't want to order from them, this might be a good resource for seeing the fabric drape, stretch, or feel.

Be sure to download the Ultimate Resource Guide as well! It has lists and links to many of the items we recommend including some of our fabric sites for buying fabric!

When I went to search for the A to Z Fabrics book that Sherry was speaking of, I about had a heart-attack! Itā€™s listed for hundreds of dollars as itā€™s out-of-print! BUT, I kept searching and was FINALLY able to find it at a cost I thought was affordable. Donā€™t give up! Itā€™s out there!

I am trying to decide which season would be most useful to have the swatches for, or should I order one from each season?
Thanks for your help. This is a great idea!

Truly enjoyed this conversation today. Love the idea of a swatch book. I look for most of my fabric online and knowing how the fabric is made up, drapes etc etc is a huge help. I love sewing Historical Clothing and clothing for the Huret Reproduction Dolls. Right now I am trying to find fabric that matches as close as possible to the Princess Dolls clothing that was given to Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret from the people of France in 1938. I do have two reproduction dolls that are around 18" tall, the patterns of the the original dolls clothing, reproduction of the fish fabric and kits to make their beaded purses. All were made by the talented Stephanie Ehmen. What I need is to find the fabrics to reproduce the clothing using the patterns. I am scheduled to give a presentation about the Princess Dolls to my Doll Club in July of 2023. So must get busy.

My questions has to do with finding the right quality of flannel fabric. Joann has lots of flannel but, some of it is not soft and sorry to say cheap. Some is great. How can I tell when Iā€™m ordering on line which is the highest quality of flannel. Does it show up in the fabric content?
Thanks and enjoying this topic. Linda
