A favorite cultural tradition in my area is where the community comes together to make a huge and very professional musical production each winter after Christmas. Hundreds of high school student actors and support crew, seamstresses, woodworkers, artists, sound and lighting technicians all come together to make our productions successful. I would love to see doll-sized garments that represent costumes from famous shows. My personal favorites are the blue evening gowns and red and white Mrs. Claus gowns worn in White Christmas, and any gowns from Oklahoma. They are so feminine and exciting to the children who come to our shows. They want to touch them and think they look like princesses. It always feels so magical to see the wonder on their faces.

The cultural tradition that we continue is Spritz cookies. My mom made them when I was a child, and my grown children and grandchildren count them as something they “need” at Christmas. I always make the tree pattern, then cover it with green sugar and small colored round sprinkles.

Although some of the practices of the old South I find repulsive, one must admit they had some beautiful clothing—that part of their culture is worth saving even if nothing else is.

I would love to see some patterns of the Welch/Irish people from the days ‘we’ migrated to the wonderful USA! My maiden name is ‘WELCH’ (of the Welsh or Walsh). In my area of Western North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains (Appalachia), there used to be a rather large population of us and there was a ‘special’ Blessed day when everyone gathered at the little white mountain church, dressed in memory of “Days of Wales.” Never ‘fancy’, but quaint, warm and wholesome costumes with darling ‘bonnets’, girls in pigtails and daring young boys in knickers and snap-billed caps. Very few people in our huge USA know anything about our Wales background. But, if you do a spot of studying, you’ll find it plays an important, though small role in our history. Oh, but that would be great!

We don’t celebrate any cultural traditions as none were passed down by my family on either side which I always found strange as my grandparents on both sides were not born here. Cultural patterns I would like to see are more Irish River Dance costumes. Pixie Faire already has such an excellent variety of outfits for all occasions, so it’s difficult to think of something new, but perhaps a few more River Dance ones would be nice. I also agree with those that mentioned Native American costumes. Those would be nice too.

A culture pattern I would like to see would be native American and or pioneer.
