Sewing A Themed Wardrobe: Heart Appliqué Embellishment & Machine Blanket Stitching

Hi Everyone! Now that Valentine's Day is behind us, we take a look a incorporating the classic heart into everyday projects. On of my favorite ways to do this is by creating custom appliqués! With the choice of size, color, texture, and combinations, the possibilities are endless! Follow along in this tutorial as I show you how to add a heart shaped appliqué to the pillow from the Snuggle & Store Tote Bag. For this project, we've also used one of the decorative stitches on the machine, the Blanket Stitch, to sew the finishing stitches! It's a simple project, and the technique can be applied to a variety of items or garments!

As a reminder, you can find the current months coupon codes and links to the downloadable videos in the Sewing With Cinnamon Bonuses section.

How To Make A Heart Appliqué

Supplies Needed:

  • Felt (one sheet is plenty, but if you want to create layered heart then several colors are recommended)
  • Pencil (to draw out your heart shape on paper, our heart shape was traced from a sticker!)
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Heat 'N Bond fusible product
  • Sewing machine (alternately, you can stitch the appliqué by hand)
  • Fabric for the project. We are making a pillow, the measurements are 6.5" x 8.5". Cut 2 in a woven cotton fabric.
  • Note: We found this pom pom trim at JoAnn Fabrics

Step 1: Cut out the heart shape from the felt fabric. Create layered embellishment if desired by cutting out a smaller heart from a contrasting color. (Alternately, you could use any other type of fabric.)

Step 2: With an iron, according to the manufacturers instructions, apply the Heat 'n Bond product to the wrong side of the heart fabric. Once it's cool peel off the paper backing.

Step 3: Place the heart on your pillow where desired (or garment). Press with an iron according to the manufacturers instructions.

Step 4: Look at your Sewing machine manual to find the "Blanket Stitch" option and select it on your machine. If your machine doesn't have a blanket stitch, you could also choose a satin stitch or even a simple zig-zag. Test out the stitch length and width on some fabric scraps.

Step 5: Slowly and carefully stitch around the edge of the heart shape. Pivot with the needle in the down position to continue curving around the entire shape.

Step 6: Repeat for the second heart if desired.

Step 7: Continue to sew the pillow according to the pattern instructions.

Your pillow is complete and ready to place in the Snuggle & Store Tote Bag (or on a bed if you haven't made the tote yet!)
