Boy Dolls: An Overview
For years doll fans were making their own boy dolls by replacing the wigs on their American Girl® dolls, always wondering why they couldn’t just purchase a boy doll to complete their collection. A few years back, boy dolls started to become more popular as manufacturers such as American Girl® and Our Generation® released this new category of doll. If you have ever wondered, “What are all the different types of boy dolls out there?” “Who makes them and where can I buy them?” or “How do they compare to the girl dolls?” hopefully this article will answer those questions.
Below is an overview of the most popular boy dolls in the 16-inch to 18-inch category. Some brands offer more extensive collections of boy dolls which cannot be featured in their entirety here, so we have chosen our favorites to show here.

The Liberty Jane Jeans Bundle for 18-Inch Boy Dolls features step-by-step patterns for making both bootcut and skinny jeans. Upcycle your old jeans to make your doll's wardrobe feel even more authentic, or use your favorite denim fabric to make this awesome wardrobe staple.
Most boy dolls are made by manufacturers by simply changing the face mold and hair of a doll, without any change to the size and shape of the doll body. For this reason, most boy dolls will be the same size as any girl doll from the same brand.
Get the pattern: Here an American Girl® Girl and Boy Doll are both shown wearing the Mercury Flightsuit from the pattern made by Forget Me Not Designs. As you can see by this example, the boy doll and girl doll have the same size and shape body and can wear the same size clothing.
Some designs look great on both boy and girl dolls, like many uniforms and sports clothing. Other patterns have been designed specifically for boy dolls to get that classic masculine styling and fit.

I was so excited to read this article as I looked all over the internet last week to find a comparison of the sizes between the girl and boy dolls. I have a customer who purchased a Star Wars outfit from me for her son’s Easter basket. I was concerned as I made it according to the American Girl specs and wondered if the boy. doll was the same size. Now I can make boy doll clothes using my AG dolls and I know they will fit. Thank you so much for your article.
Truly me #75 is my favorite, because he reminds me of my sons in childhood.
Thanks for the review of boy dolls. I did not know there were so many.
Andy and Franco are my favorites! Though Dylan has really nice hair.
I really like Andy. He has a nice “boy” face.
Super cute boy doll! Thanks so much for your generosity!
We needed some more boy clothes
Wonderful give-away. Thank you.
Andy. Reminds me of my baby boy, Bobby.
I like the Truly Me #75 or My Siblings Andy. Both are darling.
I would love to add a boy doll to my collection. Also, I purchased the George Washington pattern and need a boy to put it on.
Gotz Dlyan doll reminds me of my grandson. would love to win it. Thanks for the article on boy dolls, I really enjoyed it Monique
I bought Andy from My Siblings for my grandson who was surrounded by sisters and cousins with American Girl dolls. I included a set of jedi robes for his doll and my grandson loved it. I have made many outfits for the girls’ dolls. I am excited to make some new outfits for Andy too!
Thank you so much! My favorite are American Girl boy dolls!
Love the idea of adding a boy doll to my granddaughter’s collection! Thank you for including boy patterns!
I am currently making masks for my communities needs. But I will be back to sewing for the dolls when the crisis is over. Thank you for the offers and patterns.
I don’t have a Favorite, I’ve been collecting Boy dolls for a long time, before they became available. I was lucky to find someone who was selling them. I realized I could alter the Girls patterns to make the boys their clothes. So when Pixie Faire started posting the Boy Clothes I was excited! Making out fits for the Boys are as much fun as making them for the Girls. Thank You for adding them to your pattern selection. Love Your Patterns!!!
I like Truly Me #75 reminds me of my grandson when he was little
I am all about the boys!
Thank you so much for your generosity during this difficult time! We love you!
I like Franco, having a soft spot for the Italians right now.
I like this little guy. Sooner or later I’ll have a boy doll to sew for.
AGAT’s Max was probably my favorite boy doll, that is until I saw Dylan. Max looks like one of my grandsons, Dylan has the cutest hair ever. How to choose just one??
Great giveaway! I don’t own a boy doll and I love Max. Thanks for the chance to win.
I Truly like #75 Truly Me BUT my favorite is Andy: from My Siblings and My Pals Dolls I think he is the cutest but because he has a brother with Autism he touches me the most.
I really like the #75 boy doll from American Girl. His Asian features fit well with my little kids and their papa.
My favorite boy doll is definitely Andy My Sibling doll, because of the words that comes with him about autism. I like the puzzle pieces and it would match the dress Im gonna sew to a litte girl with autism and her baby doll. Her big sister is so great to her, just as Andy seems to be. The puzzle pieces are all diffferent, but all of them needs to make the whole puzzle!
I really enjoyed your article – I learned quite a bit! I like Max and Parker the best. Dylan is super cute! I love all of the AGAT dolls – such unique expressions, and lovely skin tones. While Max is the same size as the AGAT girls, he seems so tall. I believe it is an optical illusion – I am so used to the long dresses, shorts, etc. on the girls, that the jeans (soft fabric) and t-shirt make Max look like he has really long legs. I like his hair – it is so thick – similar to my son’s hair! Max looks active and strong. I particularly like the weight of the AGAT dolls – the actual physical weight – easy to carry, easy to move around. No little ones here, but they are perfect for small hands, and old hands that do not work as well now. It has been a long time since I made clothes for a boy – it will be fun. I would love to see Parker in person – he is so sweet! Gotz is a good brand. I have Hannah and her dog, and one of the small girls that is perfect for little ones to carry over their arms. I know that they would love to have a little brother. It is not possible here, to see and touch the many beautiful dolls that are available. Although, most of us are staying at home these days!! Thanks again for the article. I always love doll giveaways!
I like the My Siblings dolls the best because of the way they look and the wonderful message behind each doll.
I would love to win a boy doll for my granddaughter as she only has one boy doll so far and that is Ken from Barbie collection, who I have to make clothes for often .
I would love to win a boy doll for my granddaughter as she only has one boy doll so far and that is Ken from Barbie collection, who I have to make clothes for often .
How fun…..love the guy dolls!
My grandson already has a doll-sized soccer jersey. He’s just waiting for a guy doll. With two sisters and three cousins – all girls, I really need to give him a hand with this!
My girl dolls are asking for a brother, and so are my grandsons!
I like all of the dolls but My Siblings Dolls, Andy is my fav. It touches my heart that there is a meaning behind those dolls. Thanks for a chance to win.
I liked Truly Me #75 as he as more of a boy appearance..
I like Max. He’s the kid you notice quickly, really stands out. His face doesn’t look like most doll. Face is so interesting.
I love the my siblings dolls. They are so sweet!
I like Andy the best because of his connection to autism through his brother. I have a granddaughter who has autism, and I love her so much. This is why I would like Andy.
I like the truly me #77, he is so cute. I have one 18 inch boy doll, just need more pattern choices.
My favorite is School Boy – his hair is awesome! I like his glasses too.
I like Max from AGAT. I received him this winter and haven’t yet started to make clothes for him. I would like to get Logan sometime in the future because he is cuter than the truly me dolls.
I like the truly me #75 and my siblings doll the best. I’ve read that boys who play with dolls often become very nurturing fathers when they grow up. Bravo that there are some good ones out there so brothers can join their sisters in play with their own dolls.
They are all so cute. I really love the expression of Truly Me™ #77 and Andy reminds me of my two younger brothers when they were kids.
I got my first boy doll in 1956 loved him, I was the only kid I knew that had a boy. 2020 is time for a new one.
I like Truly Me #75. Thanks for the chance to win!
I love my boy dolls. my life and our generation dolls are the 2 most recent additions.
Truly Me #75 is my favorite because he looks like my grandson, Graham.
Love the My Siblings doll. So cute.
Thank you for the awesome giveaway.
My favourite is My Siblings® Dolls, I love the curly hair and the sport look! Thank you Liberty Jane Clothing and Pixie Faire.
We are using boy and girl dolls to make a nativity. Boy dolls that look different are hard to find. I like #75 the best.
This is an awesome give away! I’d love to try out a boy pattern. I’ve only sewn for girl dolls, too.
Truly me #75 looks like my son when he was young. All are adorable, but #75 is my fav.
So far my favorite is Logan.
I think a boy doll would be the perfect addition to my collection1 Now, which one to get??
I like Truly Me #75 best. I have an 18” girl doll so that size works best for me since I could use some of my present patterns for the boy doll as well.
I love Logan!
I like the boy dolls
I love the idea behind the Sibling Dolls. Thanks.
I like Truly Me #75 as he minds me of my husband when we were high school together. He had dark hair and beautiful brown eyes. I lost him 4.5 years ago and having this doll would remind me of the good times. Thank You, Chris
the Gotz Parker and the My Siblings Andy are my favorites. My grandson would be thrilled with any boy doll but I can’t promise his 3 year old twin sister wouldn’t claim it. How nice there are quality boy dolls available and the type you can actually make decent clothes for.
My favorite boy doll is Parker- he looks similar to my son. Thank you pixie faire for this fantastic giveaway!
I like Andy from My Siblings. I found him to be the one I liked the best after searching through the different boy dolls and it was a reasonable price too. He came to live at our home a few years ago.
That Dylan doll is really attractive and perfect for a project I’ve been planning: I hope to collect a few dolls and to get permission to make doll emsembles to offer as a fundraiser for some friends who are clergy, and people of color.
I love the American Girl doll boys such as Logan and also the My Life As boy dolls (Walmart)
Parker is my choice for a boy doll.. Good luck everyone…:)
I love American boy Number 77 he looks cute
My favorite are the American Girl 18" boy dolls such as Logan, he is such a cutie :)
What a cutie. Love the soccer outfit
All the boy dolls are cute so glad they are making such nice boy dolls. Thanks
My life as a boy doll is adorable.
I love the Kidz ’n Kats boy dolls.
Thank you for the great give away. Can’t pick a favorite have only sewn for girl dolls so far.
A boy doll would be a welcome addition to my doll family. Andy would probably be my pick of the ones described.
I have just started sewing for boy dolls. I’m sure I will enjoy it. I like the hair on all the boy dolls. It will be easier to keep it looking nice.
My favourite boy doll is Truly Me #75.
I like Truly Me #75 as he looks the most like my boys.
They are all really cool!
I like Franco and Andy. Maybe it’s the hats.
Andy is my favorite doll. Looks like one of my boys.
I would love a boy doll!
I like the My Siblings Doll, Andy. He’s adorable and has a great story to tell.
I’d love the Truly Me#77 first, but all the boy dolls are adorable and would make a great big brother for any of my dolls. The giveaway is a very nice perk on Pixie Faire.
Thank you, Pixie Faire, for doing this regularly. You are so appreciated to keep everyone involved who LOVE dolls.
I have a big Rubbermaid container that I have to use for my pattern box, it’s about 22" long, It is stuffed full of only Pixie Faire patterns, I love so many of them. I actually have made most of the patterns I’ve purchased.
Being in WA state and ordered to “Stay at Home” for the next 2 weeks, I am thrilled to be confined to my sewing room for all this time. A sewers dream, right? I may even try to sew up some boy outfits for the eventual boy I will add to my growing collection. (Don’t tell my husband I said that,
ok? lol)
Love Truly Me #75
Can’t have enough boy dolls! The Gotz boy would make a good companion to my Gotz girl.
My Pick is Andy.
I have 4 boy dolls, Logan (AG), #74 Truly Me, a My Life and an Our Generation. I absolutely love designing for them.. they look so cute in every outfit.
