Sewing On The Go: Part 1

Hi everyone, let's talk about sewing on the go. I have a trip planned this month, so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take you along that journey with me as I plan and prepare for the trip!

I'll be leading a trip, for our non-profit Sew Powerful, to visit our sewing program work in Zambia, Africa. It's quite a bit of travel (32 hours total!) and I'm thinking through different ways in which I can bring some sewing supplies with me and some tiny projects that will work well in my carry-on or possibly in my suitcase. My goal is to have something interesting to do with my hands to keep my mind occupied to help pass the time, I'm really looking forward to that!

Over this 4-part series, we’ll look at how to carry your sewing supplies with us when traveling,  talk through some different project ideas, create a cute project bag, and make a sewing travel bag with a creative pattern hack!

I'll be using the Love U Bunches Portable Closet pattern in my tutorial and pattern hack. So if you're thinking about what pattern to use your monthly free coupon towards, I'd recommend that one! We'll also have a few resources available for creating the bag and travel kit, so be on the lookout for those to be listed this week too!

As we get started, I'd love some feedback from you too! If you could start thinking about ways in which you travel with your sewing supplies and your go-to sewing projects, that'd be great.

Tips for things like: What can you carry on an airplane? What types of projects work well when you're sitting in a confined space?

Now that we have our minds spinning with thoughts and ideas, let's jump right into part one. Follow along in this video as I show you some ideas for tiny projects that I think will work well for travel.

I'm really excited to bring you guys along for this journey as I work through the details of prepping, preparing, and actually doing the travel. And I'd love to get feedback and interaction along the way. So I just invite you to join me as we tackle sewing on the go together!

I knit socks for people and dolls. I use a left over heavy clear bag that sheets came in. It is see through and has a couple of pockets to carry my patterns. I pack more yarn in my regular suitcase.

I also, love taking craft projects with me. It depends what I want to do, sometimes I’ll take crochet projects, knit projects, embroidery or sewing. I have a bag that I use that is just for my project that I’m doing. If I’m on a plane then I will bring just a small portion of the project in my purse or carry-on (more with the crochet or knitting), but I always check what is allowed in the plane cabin, I don’t want it taken away and pack the rest in my suitcase.

I definitely take projects with me when traveling. I particularly enjoying having some crochet projects with me – not microcrochet personally, but I do love to crochet doll sweater or accessories. I can always wind a ball of size 1/sock yarns to fit in my purse or carry on. The mindful (not mindless…) practice of crochet is very calming and meditative. I also like to have a small cross-stitch or embroidery project with me, but I often don’t do this on the plane since the lighting isn’t as good, especially on long overnight flights. I have a small zippered travel case that originally came with contact lenses that was repurposed for traveling projects that I’ve been using since the 1990s.
