We can’t believe it’s a new year already! With a new year, comes new goals. For many, it's time to make fitness a priority and we'd love to get our dolls in on that action too! Fitness should be fun, right? One way to exercise and play at the same time is by jumping rope! It’s fun to do by yourself or with a group. So join along in this tutorial with us and make your doll a jump rope that can look like it’s really in action! We’ve included instructions for adding wire to the jump rope, for those of you who enjoy photographing your dolls and setting scenes. For younger children, just leave out the wire to make it safe for their age.

Supplies Needed:
Let's Get Started!
Step 1: Cut a piece of twine 31 inches long and two pieces of wire 31 inches long each. Cut your elastic into two 3 inch pieces. Set all these aside. Cut two strips of card stock from the color you want the handles to be, 2 inches wide by the length of the paper, which should be 11 inches.
Step 2: Using your 3/16 inch dowel and starting my with a short end, roll your cardstock up tightly around the dowel.
Continue until you get to the end of the paper, and use your craft glue to glue the end down. You could do this with hot glue if you prefer, but it may be difficult to get a smooth result (and you may burn your fingers!). We chose to use craft glue, and took our time to hold the cardstock in place for a moment and make sure it stuck well. Slide off of the dowel. Repeat for the second strip of cardstock. You’ve made two thick paper “beads”.
Step 3: Apply some hot glue to the inside of the paper bead, and stick about half an inch of one of your pieces of elastic down into it. You may want to use your long thin tool to hold the elastic in place while the glue cools. Make sure it is glued to one inside “wall” of the bead.
Step 4: Now wrap the elastic down the side of the bead, and hot glue the first 3/8 to half inch down.
Stretch the elastic slightly and lay it down the rest of the way over the side of the bead, applying hot glue to the only to the bottom 3/8 to half inch again. Make sure you hold this in place really well so it is very secure while the glue cools.
Step 5: Now apply more hot glue to the bottom inside of the bead, and use your tool again to tuck the elastic in and hold to the inside wall while it cools.
You should now have an elastic handle that will be used to help your doll hold the jump rope!
Repeat steps 2-6 to make a second handle and set aside.
Step 6: Now take your twine and two pieces of wire and grasp the end of them 1.5 inches away from the ends.
Apply hot glue to the inside of your handle again, and push the twine and wires down into it up to your fingers. Add more glue as necessary; you want a good strong hold! After this, set aside the handle with wires and twine attached.
Step 7: Now we are going to make the little beads that our jump rope will be strung with! Use your remaining two colors of cardstock and make 1 inch wide by 8.5 inch long strips. Then cut each of these in half so the measure approximately 1 inch by 4.25 inches each - it does not have to be exact.
Our jump rope only ended up needing 27 beads, so you only need to make 28 or 30 of these, so you will have a few extra in case you mess up on any of them.
Step 8: Using the dowel again, roll up and glue each strip of paper into a bead, until you have 27-30 beads. This may take a little while, so turn on a favorite tv show or listen to some music!
Step 9: Once you have all your beads made, string them onto your twine and wires, alternating colors, and leaving 1.5 - 2 inches of twine and wires exposed.
Step 10: Once you are done, apply hot glue to the inside end of the handle that is not attached to the twine and wires yet, and push the twine and wires into it. Make sure to leave a little space that is not pushed in so your beads can move around a bit. You do not want them all tightly touching each other.
And that’s it! Once your hot glue has cooled and is set, your doll can jump rope! Stretch the elastic open and put her fingers into the opening on the handles, and gently bend the wire into a nice curved shape. You may need to bend it up at the spots where the wires join the handles. Isn’t that cute?! Now your dolls can enjoy recess like a real person!

We’d love to hear from you. Please leave a comment and tell us, What is/was your favorite playground activity?
My favorite playground activity was jump rope. We would play every recess. Next to that was swinging.
My favorite was definitely swinging! I felt like I was flying and my imagination went just about anywhere.
My favorite playground activity was swinging. I loved to see how high I could go.
My favorite playground activity was the giant swing set.
With little equipment, we played many semi-organized games like red rover, mother may i , and fox and geese (in the snow).
My favorite play ground activity was the merry -go-round!
My favorite playground activity has always been the swings! These jump ropes are such a great idea. Thank you.
My favorite playground activities were swinging and climbing the monkey bars.
I loved playing on the monkey bars.
Hopscotch….it was the best!!
My favorite at my school was the T tertotter. At some other playgrounds they had a merry-go round like structure that you could jump on that was pure delight as you spun around fast if the kids kept it spinning. That was my absolute favorite.
My favorite playground activity was the swings.
My favorite playground activity was the swings….weeeeee! :o)
My favourite playground activity was swinging on the swings.
My favorite playground activity was the see-saws and the merry-go-round. The monkey bars are pretty high on the too. I feel bad for all the kids today that will never enjoy this type of playground equipment. I had the best childhood.
Good morning! Well, dodge ball was my favorite in elementary. In High school I played Basketball, volleyball, and Powder Puff Football ! also swimming , gymnastics and tennis . Those were outside of school !
My favorite playground activities were jump rope and four square.
My favorite playground activity was just being outside, but I did like the swings. We had wooden seats at that time, which meant two of us would sometimes sit in the swing. I could swing slow and low or high and fast.
My favorite was jumping rope both at recess and at home with children in the neighborhood.
I loved to climb on the monkey bars as long as there wasn’t any boys around to look up my dress! Nobody wore pants to school back then!
My favorite play ground activity was jumping in two bands of elastic – lots of elastic bands joined together. Two people would place their legs at each end and them you would jump in lots of different ways in the two bands.
My favorite recess activities were hopscotch and jacks. There were many ways to pick up the jacks, and you did them first by ones, then twos, threes, and so on. I loved it! I also loved (and still do) the swings! I also enjoyed the Hula Hoop, but that didn’t come along until I was 12, and in junior high, so no recess then! But, frankly, as a kid I’d rather stay in and read than go out and play! (Same as now…)
My favorite play ground activity was always the “monkey bars” when I was little. I also liked the swing set, teeter totter, and the four square ball. I always loved all outside sports too, baseball, track, etc.
My favorite playground activities were jumping rope, hopscotch, the merrygoround, playing jacks,
My favorite play ground activity was what we called Chinese skipping which was lots of elastic bands joined together. Two people would place their legs at each end and them you would jump in lots of different ways in the bands
My favorite activity was the school swings they were so big it made swinging even more fun!
Quand j’étais petite, on adorait jouer à la marelle dans la cour de l’école.
My favorite playground activity was the apparatus they called the giant stride. It had a pole with chains hanging from it with bars to hold onto. You grabbed a bar and ran around it and just flew into the air… It was wonderful!!! You could also get a bigger kid to launch you once in a while, but it was a lot of fun. Now they are banned because you could fall off and get hurt.
My favorite playground activity was the see-saw and Merry-go-round!
I loved the swings best.
My favorite playground activities were swings and monkey bars!
My favourite playground equipment was the swings and slides
I was forever on the monkey bars! My poor mother had to keep me in hot pants under all my dresses, which had to have sashes to keep them from floating beyond my waist as I hung upside down by my knees, and she always shuddered as I hauled on cowboy boots before running out the door. I always came home barefoot. The boots came off as soon as I got to the sand pit. Mama said I was a heathen in girl’s clothing LOL.
My favourite activity was playing on the monkey bars.
My favourite playground activity was skipping Double Dutch.
My favorite was always swinging
My favorite playground activity was swinging on the bars.
Quite ironic, but I LOVED to jump rope! We had so many rhymes we chanted as we jumped…and it was so much fun! Loved all the moves to get in and out without the rope touching you! I also loved playing jacks…which amazes me now, ‘cause I can’t do it at all! My best friend and I played jacks every chance we got!
My favourite playground equipment were the swings l could go like the wind higher and higher and then just close my eyes and just float back and forth.
How fun. I showed this to my cheer team. They thought the jump rope for dolls was great. I was a swinger-girl. I would hang, spin and flip around on the monkey bars. I loved haging upside down. It’s funny now, as an adult, i hate being upside down and don’t l like spinning.

tetherball because I was so tall and 4 square
tetherball because I was so tall and 4 square
We called it a Witch’s Hat. Not sure if that’s the real name. It was an upside down cone shaped thing made from round metal like the monkey bars but it balanced on top of a pole. You reached up and grabbed the bar and either ran to make it spin or swung back and forth. Many kids could be on it at the same time. There are other ones that had benches as well but ours were just the hang on style.
My favorite playground activity was swinging on the swings!
My favorite playground activity was Dodgeball and the swings.

Anything that I could climb on. This included the merry-go-round, the Swings, and the slide in addition to the monkey bars and jungle gym.
My favorite playground activity was swinging across the “monkey bars”, like a horizontal metal ladder set up on two ladders at each end.
My favorite playground activity was going on the swings. I would swing as high as I could then jump off…it felt like flying.
The climbing equipment
I still love the swings!

My favorite playground activity was hopscotch and jump rope. I also enjoyed playing marbles.
My favorite playground activity was tetherball!
My favorite playground activity was freeze-tag. But this jump rope is just like the ones at the elementary where I substitute. It made me smile.
My favorite play ground active was anything I could do with my girlfriends. Weather it was playing a game, hanging upside down on the jungle gym, or using the swings. A friend to do it with made it better.
I loved the swings during recess or at a park. It was so fun to teach my children how to ‘pump’ when they were old enough. It meant that I could stop pushing the swing and return to swinging next to them. As a grandma I still love the swings.
My favorite playground equipment was the swings and slide
My favorite playground activity was the big circle that you ran around holding one of the metal bars, then jumped onto it and went around and around until it stopped . If you were lucky and others were playing too they could push the thing around while a bunch of us sat on it and rode around. I noticed the park by us removed all of them as dangerous items.
My favorite activity was jumping rope and the swings. Oh, so many years ago.
My elementary school playground had no equipment, so my favorite things were jump rope, red rover and jacks. At home my dad built a swing for our apple tree and I loved to go high enough to touch the branches.
It was the impromptu baseball games at the back edge of the playground that I enjoyed the most.
My favorite recess game was kickball. I went to a small parochial school but we definitely had fun. That was a long time ago and not even sure if they still play this or not! :)
Jungle gym for sure! In my day we had to wear dresses to school so I always had to wear shorts under the skirt. The boys were watching! BTW, in the winter we wore long pants under the skirts because it was so cold waiting for the school bus in the snow.
My favorite playground activity was swinging on the swings and sliding.
My favorite playground activity making flower crowns from the clover blossoms.
My favorite playground activity was the swings and still love them today!
