Hi Everyone! Welcome to another installment of the Miniature Millinery series. This course is called Silly Hats! It's inspired by the creative hats on display at the St Catherines Day parade each fall.
Shari Fuller will be demonstrating a truly unique technique to turn plastic shopping bags into custom fabric! Seriously, you can make fabric out of plastic! She will continue to memorize us all with a sew-along for the Keepers Dolly Duds Victorian Caroler's Bonnet and will share a few embellishment ideas too. I'll jump in at the end and show you my take on the silly hat too!
The series will be divided into four parts:
- Part One: Follow along to see hoe to make fabric out of plastic shopping bags!
- Part Two: Sew-Along For the Bonnet
- Part Three: Create cutwork appliqué for your bonnet too!
- Part Four: Creating embellishments out of the plastic fabric.
- It's a 5-Tuesday month, so for the 5th Tuesday we thought it would be fun to invite you to post your hats in the Fb group or add them to the Inspiration gallery on PF. It will be like our very own St. Catherines Day Hat Parade!
Let's get started with Part One! Follow along in this video as Shari shows us how to turn an ordinary plastic bag into an amazing piece of fabric! The process is fairly simple, so go gather up all those plastic shopping bags and begin upcycling it into fabric too!
The hat that Shari will be making in the next video is made using the Keepers Dolly Duds Victorian Caroler's Coat and Bonnet pattern for 18" dolls. It is also available for 16" A Girl For All Time dolls.

No plastic bags available here in Victoria, B.C.! but this was fun to watch.
We always have tons of grocery bags sitting around. I can’t wait to make them into something pretty!
I’m having trouble finding the right temperature setting on my iron for correct results. It seems the bags either melt or not fuse
What temperature is the iron set on?
No plastic shopping bags in Nova Scotia, but lots of bread bags. I’ll be trying, for shoes and boots for our Canadian Maplelea dolls. American Girls footwear isn’t quite long enough.
I wish the plastic bags were not banned locally. This is so creative, I would love to try it. I think the ban is across Canada, or just about!
