Hi Everyone! Welcome back to Sewing Summer Sportswear! In Part 2, I'll be exploring a more modern look at dressing for warm weather activities like biking, hiking, and maybe even a little rollerskating! The focus is kids and teen fashion, and comfort is key - but we don't want to forget the element of style! For my first project, I'm tackling a recreation of an iconic loose fitting comfy style top which can be paired with leggings or bike shorts for a sporty look!

The Spirit Jersey originated in the early 1980s in Southern California. It was created by a small company aiming to tap into the collegiate and sorority/fraternity market. The idea was to design a roomy, oversized shirt with a drop-shoulder fit that resembled an old-school football jersey—but with a fashion twist.

What really made it iconic was the bold, puff-ink lettering splashed across the back shoulders—usually the name of a college, city, or team—which gave it a sporty, team-spirit vibe. It became especially popular on college campuses and later exploded into broader pop culture through Disney parks and tourist destinations.
You could say it's the fashion equivalent of a warm hug from your alma mater or favorite vacation memory—nostalgic, comfy, and proudly wearable.

I've been playing around with the idea of scaling down this iconic design, and am super excited to show you the Liberty Jane Malibu Libby: Souvenir Jersey pattern designed to fit 18-inch dolls! The pattern itself is a pretty simple design, the challenge of course is that the graphic spreads across the entire back of the top so the standard opening of the garment (for doll dressing) had to be reevaluated. With the opening moved to the shoulder, the top came together quickly and provides the perfect canvas for creating scaled down souvenir memorabilia!
One of the best things about this project is that it's perfect for upcycling! No need to hunt down the perfect fabric from non-existent fabric stores. Simply raid your closet, or pop into a thrift store and look for graphic t-shirts that have a graphic that's between 4 - 7 inches across and only a few inches tall or tirm-able (like my Taylor Swift up cycled example). I used several different children's tees for my projects and had plenty of fabric left over!

Follow along in this video to see how I used a few up cycled tees to make my Souvenir Jerseys:
Project Notes: To prepare your up cycled tee, simply cut it apart at the seams, allowing you to lay the fabric flat and examine your pattern placement options. We'll be "fussy cutting" the Top Front and Top Back pieces for this project.
Use the ribbing! Carefully trim off the ribbing around the neckline. I simply trimmed it at the seamline (way too much work to try to remove all the stitching!). Depending on your tee, the ribbing might be narrower than the pattern piece, but that's ok! Just determine the best seam allowance for your cut piece and trim it to the length needed for the neckline and sleeve cuffs.
Designing A Custom Graphic: In the video I showed my custom Pixie Faire graphic cut using my Cricut Maker machine. I used a cool "puff" heat transfer vinyl. It looks super adorable in the video and my photos, but I'm sad to say that after a week or so I've noticed this "off-brand" HTV product is peeling off my tee (insert sad face here). All this to say - choose your HTV product wisely, stick with Cricut brand or other brands with good reviews!
