Sewing Trims - Embellishment Ideas and Tutorials

Hi Everyone! In Part 4 we wrap things up with a look at using trims to create 3D embellishments. This is a technique that mesmerizes me, I haven't done it that often and am still perfecting my skills in this area too! Melinda, the designer of the Melody Valerie Couture brand, provides us with a look at a technique called passementerie and I have selected a few other tutorial videos that show how to use silk ribbon to create accents like flowers!

Watch the passementerie tutorial video below. I think this would be a great technique to use to add a graphic word as an embellishment to the front of a tee or hoodie. Something similar to this top I saw while shopping one day!

Week Four Task:

  • Watch the videos and practice a few of the techniques demonstrated. I encourage you to go for it, try something new! Adding a simple flower or word to your garment can really change the overall look!
  • Share with the group some examples of effective uses of trims on your garments.
  • Jump over the SWC Facebook Group for conversation and project sharing.

Tutorial Videos for silk ribbon embroidery are posted below. The 3rd one shows great techniques, but I apologize for all the ads, just click, skip add after the add starts to continue with the video.

Love Love LOVE embroidery!! Enjoyed the videos very much, but am disappointed to not have gotten directions on how to transfer this information to the piece you want to embroider in sewing your design. For example, it’s noted that the fabric is pulled taught in the frame. If you did that even to cotton you could stretch it or get it out of shape. Should you iron on interfacing to protect it? I imagine you embroider prior to stitching the garment. Would’ve loved more information on that. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

If you click on the “Watch on YouTube” link in the lower right corner of each video, you will go to the YouTube site. If you have a YouTube account and are logged in, you can then save the video link or Subscribe to the video creator’s channel (which is what I did). I am not aware of any way to save the video directly from this page. Hope this helps. :)

I love these ribbon embroideries and wish oh wish there was a way to save them to my computer to watch anytime. There are so many You Tube videos I would love to save but know you cannot. Such a pretty way to embellish doll clothing.

Loved doing ribbon embroidery and couching oh so many years ago. It is so good to know it is still a loved art. Thank you.
