I had so many wonderful teachers but Mrs. Stevenson, second grade, stands out in my memory. She was sooo glamorous! She wore very stylish clothes and her full skirts made a wonderful sound when she walked. But most of all, every day she wore a gold locket on a long chain that she would open & snap closed out of habit. I wanted that locket & to look like her when I grew up!! Maybe that’s where I started being interested in fashion!

Hands down, THIRD GRADE! Mrs. Clark was both my classroom teacher at a rural school in Virginia and my Sunday School teacher. She was love personified in the best ways, such an encourager building us up from the inside out—loving but never putting up with nonsense. She looked to each child’s strengths, whether it be subject matter, personal storytelling, athletics, music, or mine—creativity. Because of Mrs. Clark, I had the courage to enter in a multi-county art competition and won for my age group. At Sunday School her gentle “nudging” me into G.A.’s helped me to learn many Bible memory verses I still cling to. Her love and guidance also helped me through a difficult time at home, as my parents were on the verge of divorce. She was my role model, shining light on the path that led to my becoming a teacher—eventually teaching third grade! I thank God at every remembrance of Mrs. Clark.

My favorite grade was eighth. Two of my teachers got together to have a “serious talk” with me. They told me that I was a very good writer and should consider careers that would use that skill. Previously, I assumed that everybody could write as easily as I could. It never occurred to me that it was any kind of skill or talent.

I really liked going to school so I have a few favorite years but after a lot of thinking I’ve decided to say that 5th grade was my favorite grade. I had two wonderful teachers who genuinely cared about all of their students and I experienced the pure joy of reaching a goal through hard work and dedication. In two years I went from being in the “below grade level” reading group to being in the “above grade level” reading group.

I have three favorites. First because I learned to read and write. My teacher was super sweet. Her name was Mrs. Lions. Back then, kindergarten was only for the rich kids. Next would be Junior and Senior years because I was a cheerleader. We were a small school and that was such fun.

My favorite grade was first grade. I didn’t have many friends before that, and it was just magical. So many people to play with! And, my dad was a teacher at the high school nearby on the campus, so I was never afraid of being away from family. My teacher was so sweet and at almost 70, I still remember her name.

8th grade. My teacher was Mrs. Stanger at Crozier Jr. High In Inglewood, CA. She ran a tight ship with love for all her students. She emphasized education and respect for others. I also remember she had thick salt and pepper gray hair with braids beautifully crossed atop her head. She had flashing dark eyes and always had a smile. Every 7th grader wanted her as their 8th grade teacher. I was one of the lucky ones.

I think I would have to say that the 11th, junior, year was possibly the most fun. It was my first full year in the drum and bugle corp. It was exciting to be on the football field at half time and participate in a parade in downtown Houston. My senior year was, of course, full of many exciting events, but with graduation on the horizon there were stresses as well. We had special senior activities like the Football Banquet, Senior trip and Prom. The stresses were finals, picking a college, getting married, going to work and parting of many friends.

I would have to say 5th grade. My teacher was older, experienced and super patient, loving and warm. She highlighted our strengths, encouraged us to shine and also easily identified and supported us in areas where we were challenged. My classmates were lively, fun and engaged and there was a great deal of kindness and consideration for others.
In retrospect I realize that for many of us it was the last carefree year of childhood.

In 6th and 7th grade, I had a great English teacher who recognized that I actually remembered everything from previous years and didn’t need all the repetition that classes at that age tend to focus on, so she started giving me hall passes to go to the library on those class days, allowing me to explore whatever subjects I wanted, engage in creative writing projects, and otherwise stretch my mind instead of being locked into the classroom box. Doing that let me feel more free to continue to explore a wide range of topics as I continued through High School and into college, leading me to a degree and a career I never would have imagined back then!

5th grade—my teacher became ill in September and had an older sub until Jan. 1st when the class was divided and I went to a teacher that would become my friend and mentor. She took me and other disadvantaged students to the monthly “Travel Log”, put on by a community organization. During the summer that year, she took me to local museums and the zoo, as well as out to her farm. She was the reason I went into teaching and I continued giving back to my students. I had a special needs 4-H club and special needs Girl Scouts unit. Their artwork was displayed at the county fair and at the nearby state fair. The parents were so proud of the ribbons their children won. I took my scouts to Chicago and to DC several times. Many of my girls had never even crossed the river into KY or gone anyway outside of our town. My 2 children are also teachers. They give back to their students too.

I guess my favorite was grade 3, because of my teacher, Miss Burnbreyer. Probably not spelling her name right, it was hard for us kids to learn. At first we all just called her “Teacher”. It is so funny thinking back on that. She was kind and was probably fresh out of college. She invited a small group of us girls to go to her apartment after school in June and then go to her mom’s big house which felt like an old mansion to me. She got married in June and told us what church and the time, so we could watch her go down the aisle. It was the 1st wedding I ever went to, in a big church in Detroit, Michigan.
