Differences Between Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins®

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Ultimate Resource Guide

The Bitty Baby® doll is meant to represent a newborn baby, while the twins are meant to represent toddlers. The bodies of the baby and twin dolls are nearly identical in design and size, as is detailed in the following chart.

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Ultimate Resource Guide

Note: The Shoulder measurement is taken from shoulder point to shoulder point across the front of the body only. The Chest, Waist, and Hip measurements are taken all the way around the circumference of the body.

Other than the difference in hair style (painted on versus wig), the primary difference between the two types of dolls is in the shoulders. The Bitty Baby® has a shoulder seam in the cloth body, constructed similarly to a sleeve, while the Twin's shoulder is one continuous piece with the rest of the cloth body. Despite this difference in construction, both dolls have the same armscye.

The Bitty Baby® shown here was purchased in 2020, and older versions of the doll may have had shoulders without seams, as the twin dolls did.

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Compared to Other Dolls

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Ultimate Resource Guide

There are almost countless options for baby dolls on the market. If you are shopping for a baby doll that you hope is similar in size to the Bitty Baby® or Twin, many 15-inch dolls are roughly the same size. For instance, the Melissa and Doug® 15-inch baby doll has very similar measurements to the American Girl® baby dolls, and patterns designed to fit the Bitty Baby®/Twins® fit this doll fairly well, as shown in the green and white outfits above.

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Ultimate Resource Guide

While both the Bitty Baby® and the M&D dolls have a pleat in their cloth bodies at the hips to allow them to pose sitting, the above image shows that the effect is more dramatic in the Bitty Baby®, while the M&D baby is a bit more flat. Yet, looking back to the measurement chart, this difference didn't result in much of a difference in hip size.

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Compared to 18-inch Dolls

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Ultimate Resource Guide

Above is a size chart comparing an 18-inch American Girl® doll and a Bitty Baby®. While they are different in height, their upper body measurements are not too different, making some tops and dresses able to fit both dolls.

Get the Look: The above dress is made from the Sweet And Simple Dress Pattern by 123 Mulberry St, and is designed to fit 15-inch baby dolls.

What About Shoes?

The Bitty Baby/Twin® foot is similar in width to the 18-inch AG foot, but is a bit shorter. Closed toed shoes that are made for 18-inch dolls, like the white boots both dolls wear above, can be worn by the Babies. Open-toed shoes might look too long or not stay on the Baby foot securely.

I love any of the Bitty Babies. I would be easy to make clothes and dress them with no hair to comb later. Headbands to match would be fun to make as well.

All the Bitty Babies are so cute! If I absolutely have to pick, I would pick a brunette doll. Also, I have a fondness for the Bitty Twins as I am a twin. But I love the practical play value that the painted hair of the Bitty Baby gives.

I think I saw a Bitty Baby with Red Hair! That would be my current favorite. Between my youngest daughter who was the perfect age when Bitty Babies arrived on the scene and my four granddaughters I believe we have all the other Bitty Babies in the family. I always wanted a red headed baby amd a Bitty Baby with red hair now would be the perfect addition to our family!

Love the twins! I played with dolls into my teens and was ecstatic when I got my first “ floppy babydoll” that was like a real baby! And I was 12 at the time- almost too old for baby dolls – but I loved her. Now as an “old lady” I can embrace my inner child and make doll clothes for my grandchildren and play with dolls again! Would love twins with blond hair as my sons were all blonds. And boy dolls as they get overlooked!

I have to say that it is very hard to pick a favorite. I never met a baby doll that I didn’t like. I suppose if made to chose I would pick #2. I just love their curly hair. Especially those little pony tails on the little girl. Thanks for the nice article. I have always noticed that the 18 inch dolls patterns could be “made” to fit lots of baby dolls. Fun to make all the patterns work for other dolls.

I have had multiple bitty babies over the years and my favorite was a blonde with blue eyes. The doll had been “baptized” many times over as she was used to teach students at a Catholic school about being baptized! Never once did the water touch the doll’s eyes or cloth body, but she did come back very clean and smelling good!
