This tutorial will show you how to create a belt using fabric and a bit of sewing, but you can also use a flat ribbon in a variety of widths and skip all the sewing in Part 1 and go straight to Part 2 for securing the buckle or slide to make this DIY tutorial even easier!
Ok, follow along with the full tutorial here:
Supplies
Doll scale buckles, slides, and d-rings can be hard to find! Here are a few resources to help you find what you're looking for.
Option 1
OR
OR
All belts
Part 1: Fold and stitch the belt strap. (if you're using ribbon or trim that is the correct width, skip to Part 2)
1. Cut trim to the desired length
2. Fold the trim lengthwise into thirds, with the second fold overlapping the first fold.
3. Using a non-stick presser foot, straight stitch 1/8″ from one folded edge, stopping 1/2″ from the end.
Tip: A non-stick presser foot helps the fabric slide under the foot without having to pull to help it along. If you don't have a non-stick foot, you can apply a small piece of scotch tape to the underside or your regular presser foot to create a non-stick surface. Just be sure to only apply it to the metal, don't cover the hole that the needle will stitch through!
4. With the needle down in the fabric, lift the presser foot.
5. Turn the belt to sew diagonally to a point; sew 4 stitches.
6. With the needle down and presser foot up, turn the belt to sew diagonally back to the opposite side of the point; sew 3 stitches.
7. Straight stitch back down the other long side of the belt. When you get to the end, raise the presser foot, pivot, and sew straight up the short end. Backstitch to secure.
8. Trim the ends of the point along the stitching lines, being careful not to cut through the stitches.
Part 2: Attaching the Slide or Buckle
Option 1:
1. Slide the straight end of the belt through the buckle slide, right side up.
2. Fold back 1/2″ toward the belt, wrong sides together.
3. Using a zipper foot, sew the folded end close to the belt.
Option 2:
1. Instead of sewing the buckle/slide, you can also use an eyelet setter and punch a hole and secure it with a tiny eyelet.
Option 3:
Creating a functional buckle closure
Alternately, if you have a buckle with the prong that fits through adjustable size holes, here's how to finish off that belt. This excerpt is taken from the Liberty Jane Motorcycle Jacket pattern,
1. After sewing the belt strip, create a tiny "loop" and secure it 1-1/2" inch from the buckle end of the belt. Then slide the end through the buckle and secure the fabric back to the belt using a zipper foot and straight stitch.
2. At the opposite pointed end of the belt, 1-1/8" in from the end, create markings about 3/8" apart. In this example, we are using 4 eyelets. Using an eyelet setter, pinch the holes through the belt and then secure the eyelet into each hole.
3. Once the eyelets are set, slide the pointed end through the buckle to secure the buckle.
Now it's your turn! Are you ready to make your own doll size belt?

My Aunt always said, wearing a belt made her feel like a mattress with a rope tied around the middle! I concur! HA! So, I personally don’t wear a belt. But, on my dolls, I DO think it makes a very nice accessory (accent) to the outfit, especially a fitted waist dress.
I only use belts as accessories. If my pants need held up with a belt, it’s time to buy new pants! 😆
Sooooo cute!! Thanks
I use belts as accessories for coats, dresses, etc.
I love belts as accessories but I cant ever seem to pull it off so I use them for functionality.
I think I already have a buckle so I would grab a pretty piece of woven ribbon and go to town on making a belt for my doll!
If I wore belts, it would be as an accessory.
Any doll looks great in a belt, antique, vintage or modern. A pop of color or to dress up an outfit.
I mostly wear belts for functionality: to hold my slacks/jeans up.
A belt is like jewelry. It can make some outfits look classy and others look professional.
I wear belts for functionality. Have never enjoyed wearing belts, but sometimes you just have to.
I think belts would be cute as accessories with dresses. I’ve never made them so thanks for the tutorial. I’m going to give it a try now!

I like a belt mostly as an accessory, but will wear them to keep my pants up as a necessary.
Belts as an accessory can add so much pzazz to an outfit, making a fashion statement.

I have found that dollar store cat collars and old watch straps yield great belt buckles. I like statement belts to accessorize very simple doll dresses.
I prefer a belt for an accessory. Thank you Cinnamon for the awesome giveaways.😘
I would make a nice brown belt for my son’s boy doll clothes. It would look great with some of the cargo pants that I have made. Also my daughter would LOVE to make these belts for her dolls!
As a doll accessory, I love belts to finish the look of an outfit, leather with a concha buckle to emphasize a western look, rhinestone for a bit of extra bling or a fringed boho, hippie touch.
Personally, I gave up belts after children, when I no longer had a tiny waist and no hips. LOL (They are worth the sacrifice.💜)
It’s fun to add accessories like a belt to an outfit adding an accent color.
Great idea!
Happy Tuesday!! I don’t wear belts, so my favorite way for my doll to wear a belt is as an accessory. Thanks so much for this tutorial, I will definitely use it. Thanks for the opportunity and all the ideas and inspiration.
Meant to say thrift store for purses and shoes that have buckles or loops and perhaps material or leather
I love the idea of dressing up a outfit with a belt. My first thought is a jewel belt for a brides dress. Can’t wait!
I love belts, and enjoyed this tutorial. I have used the one piece watch bands as belts too.
I can’t wait to make one of the belts… I have several outfits for the dolls that need one to complete the look… Thank you.
Thanks for the belt info, but I don’t like to use belts because the kiddos lose them so easily.
Belts are great accessories but I don’t use them very often on the dolls.
I love belts for the tunic sweaters I love wearing in the winter, or to change the look of a sundress in the summer. Especially if I wear cowboy boots with the dress.
I have made these doll belts out of thin flexible leather. Leather needle can be helpful but a denim needle works. It could also be used on a cowgirl’s hat
I really liked the tutorial, it gave me some good ideas to make a couple of belts, for dolls of different styles. I’ve used ribbon, but never sewn a belt, so that’s my next endeavor.
I have a small packet of buckles – from a craft store, so I am ready to go!
A belt and shoes always complete an outfit!

I have some vinyl, cork, and other interesting small pieces that would make great belts. A cute idea for more doll fashion my granddaughters will enjoy,

As an accessory, especially with a cute dress!
I wear a belt all the time with jeans because within an hour of putting on jeans with spandex (seems like that is the only way they sell them around my neck of the woods) was the waist is too big and the pants start slipping down.
I also would like to find buckle patterns for shrinky dinks – so personalizeable
I think belts are a lovely decorative element.
It is a lot of fun to make belt buckles or glides out of polymer clay. Thank you for the tutorial.
Great tutorial! I would love to see some templates for making buckles out of shrink plastic. Lots of possibilities there with rubber stamping or colored pencils, etc. Other things I’ve thought about are macrame, braids, chain, or friendship bracelets
Definitely as an accessory because, when I use belts, its for dresses. It can add style and nice color combinations.
