We've put together this super quick and easy tutorial to make your own doll-sized scrunchie! This adorable hair accessory is perfect for recreating your favorite '80s look or capturing the cool-girl look with modern styling.
Scrunchie Making Supplies:
Step 1: Cut out your strip of fabric to the above measurements. Press the fabric if needed.
Step 2: Fold the strip in half lengthwise and pin.
Step 3: Sew along the length of the fabric with 1/4" seam allowance. Trim seam allowance close to stitching line being very careful not to clip through the stitching.
Step 4: To turn the strip right-sides-out, pin a safety pin to one edge and feed it through the tube of fabric. When the safety pin reaches the other end of the tube, the fabric can be pulled right-sides-out.
Step 5: Now that the scrunchie fabric is right-sides-out, attach a safety pin to one end of the 5-inch piece of elastic.
Step 6: Use the safety pin the feed the elastic through the fabric tube. Be sure to pin the end of the elastic to the fabric edge so it doesn't get lost inside.
Step 7: Pull both ends of the elastic and tie in a knot. (The pins in the above photo are simply holding things in place for visibility.)
Step 8: Feed the tied elastic back into the fabric. At the fabric opening, pull one edge of the fabric over the other, letting the raw edge of the fabric roll or fold over itself to create a clean edge. Sew a straight line over this fabric opening to secure.
Step 8: Feed the tied elastic back into the fabric. At the fabric opening, pull one edge of the fabric over the other, letting the raw edge of the fabric roll or fold over itself to create a clean edge. Sew a straight line over this fabric opening to secure.

Well I use to iron my long blond hair so it would be very straight! I got over that! I also used any ones left over beer for my rinse! For awhile I used laundry rinse to rinse my hair. I would mix 3 different kinds together for the laundry, mix a small amount with water and pour it on. It smelled great the beer did not! I don’t think I wore anything in my hair but for awhile we had plastic headbands and later we had knit headbands. I have lots of things for my dolls the best ones are older then I am!!
Bows, headbands and scrunchies as well as hair clips and fancy bows and barrettes.
this is great!
Muchas gracias. ?Como puedo iniciar sesion?
I love scrunchies.
Anything that keeps hair in its place is my favorite!
What a fun afternoon activity. My favorite hair accessories are bobby-pins, so versatile.
I use pony tail holders on my dolls! Scrunches will be fun to make.
head band
My favorite hair accessory is hair clips. I have long thick hair so it makes it a snap to put it up. Thank you for the scrunchie tutorial.
ponytails
My favorite hair accessories are scrunchies and barrettes.
Thank you for asking!
Take care and have an awesome week!
I like hair clips to pull my hair up and off my neck. My granddaughter likes to wear headbands to coordinate with her clothes.
I use pony tail holders.
I love scrunchies. I use them all the time. :)
I like the look of hair bands or a pretty hair clip
My favorite hair accessories have to be headbands. But scrunches are sure looking cute too!
Love scrunchies!
Love the idea of a SCRUNCHIE! Great, easy pattern to follow directions. Another quick idea is to purchase a 7 3/4” doll straw hat (Hobby Lobby $1.49). Construct a basic fitted strip pattern (finished 1/2 to 3/4” wide) to slip onto the crown of the hat. Once you have the pattern there is no end to all the interchangeable bands that you can make with matching (or contrasting) fabrics, ribbons, bows, artificial flowers etc.
I love scrunchies I wear them everyday having long hair they keep it from being in my face all the time. You can use them in many ways, hair back, pony tail, in a bun or even with braids. Just like my dolls, they use them in many ways. Thank goodness for scrunchies:)
I have hair down to my bottom so, I use scrunchies most of the time, always when crafting or sewing.
I have unruly and rather too long hair, so I wear heavy hair bands, 24/7! Ta, Deb.
I would have to say, a hair clip, if and when I use one, which is rare:-)
I like them all, barrettes, hairbands and clips. Love using a braid as a hairband.
Cute barrettes are my favorite.
Oh do I remember in the early 80’s my girls loved scrunchies.I made them a range of colors. Now I have long hair, and I also use them.Thank You for the free pattern,so we can make them for the doll’s
My favorites are pony tail holders or scrunchies all the way!
4 girls and lots of hair accessories. Scruncies are a hit in our family :-)
So many wonderful patterns in one place and so many ideas. Now to just get myself a new 18" doll to sew for. Love sewing doll clothing and collect dolls.
I use a large hair clip to keep my up and out of my face. My granddaughter loves scrunchies! And I made quite a few for her mother in the eighties. My own mother had a saying, “Never through out clothes and shoes. Fashion eventually comes back around.” Wish I would have listened.
My favorite hair accessor for my “girls” are the tiny butterfly clips. I can do so many things with them. I use them to hold their hair back like a barrette or on top of a pony tail, at the bottom of plates. Scrunchies are my second favorite since they wear alot of pony tails and dog ears.
On myself, the most used hair accessory is a ponytail holder, or a mini-clip to hold my bangs back or give me a puff on top of my head. On my dolls, I love the little jeweled hair clips to give them a pop of sparkle.
Mostly I wear a large hair clip (you know, the bite ones) to anchor my bun. My hair is nearly to my rear, so don’t trust anything else! Almost embarrassed to admit that I knew the scrunchie pattern a little too well being a child of the 80s myself…well born in mid 70s but that means 80s is what I remember
Love headbands for myself and my dolls. Made a ton of scrunchies when they were in style the first time. Need to start back up.
My Granddaughter loves to do her dolls hair. One of her favorite is a pony tail she will love the scrunchies. This will be a good project for us to do together.
I like hair clamps..keeps my hair up and out of the way when I’m sewing and working on projects..for my dolls I love headband and hair clips with bows or flowers..
I like scrunchies—but small ones because my hair is long and thin. I make ones that match the dolls outfits from leftover outfit fabric.
I like hair clips with flowers, headbands, and Bows!
If I think about what I use the most, it’s going to be your good old ponytail holder
My dav is a ponytail elastic almost always have one handy. On my wrist or in my hair.
For the dolls live elastic headband.
I love scrunchies!! They are so much fun to make and you can make them any fabric you want which is awesome :) I will def be making some new ones for myself and my dolls :)
Claw hair clips are my favorites. So easy to use.
Scrunchie is my favorite. I use them all the time so fun to have directions for the dolls in the family.
my dolls mostly wear headbands
My dolls wear hairbows( big ones with party dresses) barrettes and small bows for every day. I make matching hair bows or scrunches for their outfits.
I wear alligator clips or good old fashioned scrunchies.

My favorite hair accessory is probably a hairband, but looking forward to making the doll scrunchies – the 80’s are big again. :)
Pixie Faire is the best place to come for ideas and patterns for dolls. Thank you!
I’m just starting to work with hairstyles on my dolls,so I haven’t used much but rubberbands, some lace and ribbon.
butterfly clips are great for my very long hair
I like bobby pins with ornaments of some type – bows, rhinestones…
I have always liked Scrunchies or Barrettes as they don’t pull out my hair at all!! Thank you so much for the doll scrunchie too.
I don’t use any accessories in my hair, but I like ribbons in girls and dolls’ hair.
I like barrettes.
I’m boring I just use a regular hairpony. But my Husband made a really cute hair pin I like as well
My go to hair accessory is definitely a ponytail holder. I have thick hair and prefer to keep it pulled back out of my face. I still use my scrunchies for this too so this tutorial is awesome :)
My favorite hair accessory is a large, lightweight barrette with 3 butterflies on it. It dresses up or down, goes with everything. My most often used hair accessory is the ponytail holder, quick and easy, and keeps my hair off my neck and out of my face when I am working.
I love my scrunchies and use them often by my favorite are bows.
great!
I love the tiny elastic bands. We use both the clear and the colored ones.
My favourite hair accessory is hair scrunchie!
I’m fond of the headbands that match the doll dresses.
On the dolls I really like the headbands & scrunchies the best.
I think my favorite hair accessory is the headband.
I don’t wear hair accessories’ Although, my granddaughters all like scrunchies. For dolls I like the tiny baby hair clips. They work great for dolls.
My favorite hair accessory is actually scrunchies! I kept my 80s stash and I am very happy they are back for sale again. I also use the U shaped tortoise-colored plastic hairpins (the nice ones from France) to create an up-do bun because they hold all day and do not pull the hair. Thanks!
I made braided ribbons barrettes for my girls in the 80s, and they loved them. We made them in lots of color combos to match their outfits.
Headbands and hair clips or ties with flowers on them.
Little barrettes, clips, and scrunches. Headbands for some costumes.
I like bows on the dolls
So cute and thank you for sharing.
My favorite hair accessory is a scrunchy.
I like to use scrunchies, headbands, and bandannas.
I love using headbands. It keeps the hair out of the way, and they can be dressed up in so many ways. I wish you would do a tutorial on making “hard” headbands by remolding little girl’s plastic headbands, or molding wooden sticks.I know it can be done by dropping materials in hot water, but so far i haven’t been very successful.
For myself ‘whatever works’! For my beautiful dolls ~ endless amounts of possibilities, but I like the scrunchy! Thanks for the tutorial, which I had thought was terrific!
My favorite hair accessories depends on who is wearing it. I love big hair bows for little girls, but hair ties and scrunchies are what I prefer for my hair….for dolls, I like bonnets and hats that match their outfits.
I love sparkling barrettes!
Bandanna or big floppy straw hat. Bandannas because I have fond memories of my aunts wearing them to keep their hair back when they visited in the summer months. Big floppy straw hats are so fun to decorate with fancy pins and ribbons but are also so functional to keep the sun out of my eyes when working in the yard . . . my granddaughter loves scrunchies and hair ties (even tho I bought here a pretty pink straw hat and let her choose the pin to put on it)- go figure!
I love them all; especially when they coordinate with historical garments. My favorite to make are the hats though. They add so much personality to an outfit; and they really set the time period nicely. Barrettes are also great fun. I loved wearing barrettes as a kid, to upsweep each side of my hair or at the back, centered on top. They always seem to add a quirky pop-culture touch to outfits. I have a set for Molly, but would love to figure out how to make my own. . . maybe using polymer clay? Hmmm, something to think about. Small barrettes are hard to find nowadays; but occasionally I see them in the infant department at Walmart.
I love scrunchies! Thanks so much for this tutorial :)
Thank you for this site with all it’s adorable, unique designs. Thank you, also, for sharing the fun items to make, like this scrunchie.
My hair was very short – so didn’t use accessories!
My favorite hair accessories are the scrunchies because we love to wear our hair up in pony tails we use the scrunchies everyday.
thank you really needed
Scrunchies for myself and headbands for my dolls!
Bows! I love to wear bows. I also like to make bows, it’s a lot of fun.
I love my short curly hair. It came in curly after chemo and I love it! No hair accessories needed but before that, a barrette kept my hair out of my face. I keep elastic bands ready to contain the granddaughter’s long hair when they come over—all in bright colors, of course.
Pony tail holder
I am rarely without a pony tail holder….it’s either in my hair, on my wrist, or in my pocket. But my favorite decorative hair accessory is a gold shamrock that I found in an antique shop years ago. It was originally a pin, but I attached it to a hair clip.
I love a hair band with an attached bow!
My favorite way to do my American Girl Dolls hair is a big bow …..❤️
I like using hair clips and barettes
Like so many others I love a bow in the hair – girls & dolls!!
My favorite hair accessory for my Granddaughters and my dolls are bows, head bands and scrunchies. I like a simple hair tie for myself!
My favorite accessory is hair clips with bows or flowers.
I love hair accessories that match the outfit
I love Vintage barrettes!! My Great Grandmother had a few that I inherited!!
I like pretty colorful barrettes.
