Boy Dolls: An Overview

For years doll fans were making their own boy dolls by replacing the wigs on their American Girl® dolls, always wondering why they couldn’t just purchase a boy doll to complete their collection. A few years back, boy dolls started to become more popular as manufacturers such as American Girl® and Our Generation® released this new category of doll. If you have ever wondered, “What are all the different types of boy dolls out there?” “Who makes them and where can I buy them?” or “How do they compare to the girl dolls?” hopefully this article will answer those questions. 

Below is an overview of the most popular boy dolls in the 16-inch to 18-inch category. Some brands offer more extensive collections of boy dolls which cannot be featured in their entirety here, so we have chosen our favorites to show here.

Get the Pattern: Looking to make the perfect pair of jeans for your boy doll? Most boy dolls are made by manufacturers by simply changing the face mold and hair of a doll, without any change to the size and shape of the doll body. For this reason, most boy dolls will be the same size as any girl doll from the same brand. 

Get the pattern: Here an American Girl® Girl and Boy Doll are both shown wearing the Mercury Flightsuit from the pattern made by Forget Me Not Designs.  As you can see by this example, the boy doll and girl doll have the same size and shape body and can wear the same size clothing.

Some designs look great on both boy and girl dolls, like many uniforms and sports clothing. Other patterns have been designed specifically for boy dolls to get that classic masculine styling and fit.
