When you sew, your creative side has a chance to explode. Color choices, fabric choices, embellishments are all up to you. Two folks can take the same pattern and create two different masterpieces that fit the personality of the two creators. Such a wonderful and satisfying adventure it can be.
My favorite thing about sewing is seeing my ideas for something come to life as I sew it together
I love everything about sewing! What started 67 years ago watching my mother sew, and begging her to let me sew on buttons has evolved into my favorite pastime. I have sewn everything from snowmobile suits to wedding gowns, and from baby clothes to upholstery projects. In recent years, quilting has become a favorite hobby. The thing I like most about sewing is being able to create so many wonderful memories, especially when I am asked to sew a christening gown or the wedding gown of a young girl’s dream, and the special time spent with my granddaughters (and even grandsons!), teaching them to sew!

Sewing, by hand or machine, brings me together with my kind mother who, over 75 years ago began teaching me to sew. Without exception, every time I sit down to sew I am brought close to her by memories of her insistence on getting it right and of her creative work-arounds….life-long gifts to treasure and share on Christmas Day and every day.
My favorite thing about sewing is that having learned to sew from my mother as a young girl, I have been able to use it in so many wonderful ways. This simple skill has taken me from being able to make my own clothes to designing and making my own wedding dress. I’ve been able to expand my skills from making simple curtains for my first apartment to designing my own appliquéd pillows and unique quilts for the infants of friends and relatives and supplying nurses and others with hundreds of unique masks during the pandemic. Those first doll clothes I painstakingly made for my own dolls evolved into making and selling doll clothes at craft fairs, making my granddaughter’s first Christmas dress, and then making doll clothes for her 18” dolls. My personal weaknesses are bookstores and fabric shops. I love the colors and textures of cloth and the trims and bits that go with them. I used to watch my mother sew and was always amazed to see a piece of material turn into a “thing” with a use and purpose. Best thing about sewing is creating new items. This includes learning new techniques, learning about the history of the item, learning to use old tools in new ways, being inspired by the work of others and sharing the joy of sewing with like-minded sexists.
Sewing used to be a way of being able to afford some nice clothes that actually fit me. I used to tear apart old, out of fashion dresses and remake them into something fashionable that my peers wouldn’t bully me about. Then as a young, working wife I used it to make and save money, make gifts, and escape from all the other more pressing responsibilities. Now, I love it as a learning and creative outlet, as something I can actually control, as opposed to the rest of my illness and aging. Doll clothes are my niece’s gifts, but also gifts to the little girl in me that never had money for clothes or dolls of my own. It’s the gift that has truly kept on giving for my entire life.
My favourite thing about sewing is the ability to make make something amazing from very simple materials and the pleasure it gives to my grand daughters.

My favorite thing about sewing is that it gives me a chance to relax and focus on the simple things in life. All the noise goes away.
Sewing gives me the priceless experience of creating items for children to play with and wear in fabrics that reflect each child’s interests. It’s my way of saying that you are seen and loved.
