The most meaningful gift I’ve made would be the fleece quillow for a lady with a serious liver issue. She was in a lot of pain a few years ago, I wanted to show her someone cared. She lives in a very cold area of the US so a quillow will be used for many months of the year. No one had ever made her a quilt before. She sews beautifully, I think her friends assumed she would make everything she needed. I picked out the two fleece patterns reflecting her love of bugs. She was so grateful for this, and surprisingly, she had never seen a quillow before, and still uses the quillow..
The most meaningful gift I made was for my 10-year old sister-in-law. She got sick the first summer we were married and had to have bed rest for a month. I used my Mother-in-law’s sewing machine and made a dress or an out fit for her Barbie every day or almost every day. She played with them for years and passed them on to her daughter. Then, her granddaughter also played with them. I added some new ones for the daughter and granddaughter.
The most meaningful gift I made someone….well, a couple, actually. After my dad died, I got back into sewing by making some pretty hospital gowns for mom; she had dementia and could no longer speak (but I could tell by her eyes that she loved the blue fabric I used for one of them!), and was bedridden. Two years later, when she died, we couldn’t find the bag that held a set of underwear, stockings and shoes we had set aside for her burial, so I found a pair of blue panties that I had cut out for her years before, and made them up, so Momma would be “decent” for burial. Probably my husband and I and maybe one or two friends are the only ones who knew this until now! That was in 2007. I miss my folks!
The most powerful gift I made was spending time with someone who was bullied. By proving to her not everyone is scary, she got the courage to go out and get a job. I was so happy to make a difference like that in someones life.
The most meaningful gift I ever made for someone was for a senior high school student. I got a call from one of our town’s school board members a little over a week before the last football game of the year several years ago. The person calling was really upset because the football team’s mascot and water boy for 4 years in a row, was sweet as can be and beloved not only by the whole team, but by the whole school and community. (Football is very important in our town, like most small towns.) The young man was a special ed student who was a very hard worker, always happy, outgoing, and loved by everyone he met. He was about to graduate; and the school wanted to reward all of his hard work and the joy he shared every day. He had never missed a single game. So they decided he would wear a uniform and actually play in the final game of the year. But there was a problem. The district couldn’t find a uniform for him anywhere, and they had tried calling manufacturers all around the country. So they called me and asked if I could make him a uniform in his size in less than a week if they supplied the fabric; so he could look like all of the other students on the field. Of course I said yes. They brought me several uniforms in the wrong sizes and I made him a patchwork uniform, that from a distance looked just like the other uniforms, since the fabric matched perfectly. The number on his jersey was #1, because that’s what he was to our community. The smile on his face when he put on his uniform on the night of the game was as bright as the sun coming out of a cloud. He was so happy that he just kept hopping up and down with sheer joy. Everyone was grinning with sincere joy for him. Our team did great that night; but the best part was that the two teams made sure he brought in the winning touchdown. Both teams cheered him on as he ran down the field ; and there wasn’t a dry eye in the whole packed stadium when he spiked the ball after he reached the in-zone. My little role in the event was such a huge honor to me, very humbling and totally satisfying. And even now, it makes me both smile and cry, just remembering that wonderful evening when a very special young man was honored for his service and significant contribution to our community.
