If you are working on a project and have to stop in midway due to unexpected distractions (spouse, kids, telephone) remember to turn your machine off even if you plan to be gone just for a minute. This will prevent any “accidental” startup of the machine before you have returned and are sure the fabric and the needles are in the right place.
My favorite sewing tip is to make a circle of elastic for waistbands overlap the edges with a zig zag stitch and use the free arm to sew them in folding the fabric over top to get a clean finish on the inside too

I have found it to be very helpful to use wash away wonder tape when sewing slippery fabrics.
