Get To Know Guylaine (In Her Own Words)
"My mother taught me the basics of sewing when I was in elementary school. At the time, she made all the clothes that my sisters and I wore herself, and I think it was important to her that we knew how to sew too.
Between 16 and 20 years old, I found store-bought clothes uncomfortable and preferred to sew my own clothes... but university eventually took up all my time and I only sewed for small projects: a curtain here, a Halloween costume there.
And then I had two children, two adorable little girls who loved playing with their dolls. Dolls who had very particular desires: "Mom, Emma wants to be astronaut…” “Mom, Malorie needs a swimsuit…” “Mom, Mali wants to dress up as an elephant for Halloween…”
So, quite naturally, I took out my old sewing machine to satisfy these very demanding dolls. At first, I was cutting into my daughters old clothes, simply making the models smaller, then I came across the Pixie Faire website, and it was a revelation.
For two years, I created so many clothes that my daughter's dolls must have more than the entire family combined! And since these dolls were always full of ideas, I started modifying patterns... then simply creating new ones.
With my husband's encouragement, I offered my patterns to Pixie Faire and, over the past three years, creating new patterns has become my favorite activity even though my daughters are now too old to play. The 27 dolls (!) who share our house whisper their desires directly to me... and they are always just as demanding and full of ideas."
Inquiring Minds Want To Know:
Q: What inspired your brand name?
Before I had kids, one of my hobbies was making beads necklaces, and since I made a lot of them, I decided to sell them. So I needed a brand name. As I used a lot of beads and ribbons in my creations, my husband suggested this name “Perles (beads) and Rubans (Ribbons)”. Even though I don't make necklaces anymore, I still loved the name, and I'm sure that one day I'll make a beautiful pattern that includes beads and ribbons.
Q: Is there a new hobby, craft, or skill you’d like to learn?
I would like to do cosplay for dolls! I would like to know how to use thermoplastic (Worbla) to make armor, corsets, hats, masks and all kinds of accessories... anything that would allow me to create heroes and fantastic characters.
Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
To create time. I am a French as a first language teacher in high school, and therefore always overwhelmed by corrections that I bring home. I find that there is never enough time in a day, a week, a month or a year to do everything I want to do.
Q: What’s your favorite flower or plant?
I like artificial plants! They are the only ones who survive my inattention.
Q: Who is your favorite doll?
It is very difficult to choose between Freida, a Ruby Red Fashion Friends whom the children renamed Alicia, and Christi (now Fiona), a Paola Reina Las Amigas. The first is always elegant and graceful, and the second is terribly cute, with her little “not as calm as I seem” look.

I love all the patterns, especially anything with ruffles or historical. Learning to sew at 12 in school and continuing to teach myself when I was young, also making drapes and curtains for the home. The last 6 years I’ve sewn mostly for my 2 granddaughters’ American Girl dolls and my Wellie Wisher. They too request certain clothes and Ashlyn, the Wellie Wisher is the demanding one! Lucky she’s cute! Thanks for the chance to win.

I love your passion and creativity! I had the same type of childhood with most of my clothes being made by my mother. It created a desire to do the same as I was growing up. My grandmother encouraged and helped me make clothes for my dolls, which I still have and passed on to my granddaughters. Then Pixie Faire inspired me to make more for their American Girl dolls. I love your embellishments on the dresses…so cute!
I am completely in love with this pattern. I would make multiple for my fox in different colors. Would look so pretty on her.
Wow! I was a teacher also, then a college instructor, but not in French. Mainly biology, chemistry, math, reading, basic English, and Secondary and Higher Education. That took up about 44 years of my life, but now I am retired and can sew! I tested one of your patterns, in fact, the 18 inch pattern that you are offering as a prize. I must say, yours is much nicer!
