Get To Know Keryn (In Her Own Words)

"If you’d asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, along with astronaut, would have been fashion designer. I started sewing from a young age and used to spend hours poring over my mum’s pattern books.
When I got older, sewing and designing my own clothes was a way to express myself and live within a student budget. If I couldn’t find what I wanted in the pattern books, I started to design my own garments, both for sewing and knitting. Luckily it was the 80s, everything was shaped like a tent and that athletic disguised a multitude of sewing sins. My career took me the way of graphic design and eventually I stopped sewing.
When I had my two daughters and saw a friend knitting for her baby, I wondered to myself why I wasn’t doing it too. My passion was reignited again with both sewing and knitting as well as picking up crochet. All my previous efforts had been pretty basic but I decided that this time I really wanted to master these crafts. That’s a lifelong journey but designing for Stacy and Stella and collaborating with my daughters, getting inspiration and suggestions from them has been so much fun.
I love the feeling of community around these crafts. Everyone is so appreciative, I feel like in a small way I’ve fulfilled my fashion designer childhood dream."
Inquiring Minds Want To Know:
Q: What inspired your brand name?
The name comes from my daughters' first American Girl dolls. Stacy and Stella.
Q: What's your favorite sewing tip?
When a friend introduced me to a rotary cutter that was a bit of a revelation. I'd definitely recommend getting one if you don't have one yet. They are must faster and more accurate and cutting out fabric is my least favourite part of sewing.
Q: Is there a new hobby, craft, or skill you'd like to learn?
Too many to mention! I'm currently learning some new pattern drafting software called Clo3D. I'm hoping this will help with faster pattern development and better fitting patterns, both for the dolls and clothes I make for myself and my family.
Q: Who is your favorite doll?
Oh, it's hard to pick, there are so many wonderful dolls, but I've always had a soft spot for Julie.
Q: What's your favorite flower or plant?
So hard to pick again but I'm going to go for hydrangeas. I love slightly unusually coloured flowers so I'm a fan of green (limelight) hydrangeas and the beautiful blues and purples.
