Hi Everyone! Welcome to Part 3 in our Fairy Tale series. Shari is continuing with another eye-catching design element for the princess theme.
When I think of Fairy Tale princesses, one of the most iconic things that come to mind are paned sleeves. You know, like the iconic red and blue sleeves worn by Disney's Snow White.

Panes, whether they are applied on sleeves, trouser, or bodices, are a classic German Renaissance detail, which makes them an ideal embellishment for one of my Cinderella gowns.

Panes evolved from a fashion trend called slashing (which is a more extreme version of the pinking technique I demonstrated earlier in this series). The practice of slashing fabrics can be traced back to 1477, after Swiss troops defeated Charles the Bold, the last Duke of Burgundy. After the battle, the soldiers allegedly raided villages for banners and other pieces of brightly colored cloth to tuck inside their tattered clothing to fill in the holes.
The colorful fabric exposed through their garments became a badge of honor and the trend quickly spread throughout Europe where it became popular with fashionable audiences.
As a more refined alternative to slashing, panes are simply finished strips of fabric that are applied one next to the other over a section of a garment.
In this tutorial, I'm going to show you four different methods for making panes that work well for doll-sized garments.

For demonstration purposes, I will be using the sleeve pattern from my Once Upon a Time Gown for each pane method to make a puffed sleeve, but the panes I am demonstrating could also be applied to just about any other section of clothing following the same basic methods.
Note: The Once Upon A Time Gown pattern will be published very soon along with a full Once Upon A Time Gown Pixie Pack sewing kit. Stay tuned!
