Sewing On The Go Part 3

Hi Everyone! Welcome back, I hope you've enjoyed the preparation and planning videos I've shared in Parts one and two. In this next installment, I'll be sharing my creation process for my custom sewing travel bag! It solves many of the issues I shared in my first post, and allows me to carry so many tools and supplies. I'm really happy with how it came out and super excited to share it with you all!

As I mentioned in the video, this is the first mock up of this project. You can follow along with the video and the basic detentions to recreate this for your self, but I do plan to pull this together as a pattern in the next few weeks!

Basic outline of the project:

  • The Main Body piece (Cut 1 fabric, 1 Lining) 14 x 8.5 with rounded corners.
  • Fusible interfacing 14x 8.5 (2)  to create stiffness, I used SF101
  • Optional Soft N Stable interfacing to create a quilted look.
  • The Pocket Piece 14 x 3.5 (Fabric and interfacing
  • Fold over elastic for top of pocket 13 inches
  • FOE for tool holder strip, Allow 20 inches, trim off excess depending on the amount of "loops" created. I added 10 to one side, and one on the opposite side.
  • The Two Interior Pockets - Clear Vinyl 5 x 7 (4)
  • Two 7" or longer zippers, trim to length.
  • Fabric Trim for Pockets, 1.5" Strips for zipper and pocket sides.
    • 1.5 x 7 (8) For zipper edges, 4 per pocket.
    • 1.5 x 10 (4)  For Pocket sides, 2 per pocket
  • Center Binding - Fabric and Interfacing, 2 x 8.5
  • Any tab at bottom of binding, finished 4 x 1/2 inch with hook and loop applied.
  • Thread Holder - Cording 16 inches, folded in half zigzagged to connect and leave a 1" loop at the bottom.
  • FOE for the outside edge, or fabric binding (44" around)

Love this bag! Interestingly, the latest issue of an Australian embroidery magazine (Inspirations #122) has a project for “Sewing on the Go” as well! They ship overseas or have overseas distributors (and digital copies) for anyone interested. I watched the SWC videos and then one day later, the Inspirations newsletter showed their On The Go project bag. Summer is definitely the prime time to travel. https://www.inspirationsstudios.com/product/inspirations-issue-122/

This is such a cute and functional bag! I think I will add handles to be able to carry it si I don’t need another bag to put it in. Thank You so much for this pattern hack!
