Spring Outerwear: Vintage Vibes and A Modern Twist
In the Spring season, outerwear for kids and teens is all about function meeting fun—combining classic silhouettes with bold colors, tech-forward fabrics, and streetwear-inspired flair. Whether they’re heading to school, hanging out with friends, or going on weekend adventures, there’s a jacket, coat, or blazer that fits every vibe and personality. In this next Sewing With Cinnamon course, we'll take a look at translating these fashion trends to the small-scale doll fashion world!
Before we dive deeper into Spring Outerwear... I'm excited to introduce the Liberty Jane Euro Libby Bercy Village Peplum Blazer pattern design! This darling little blazer, adding another expertly crafted jacket design to the list of Euro Libby pieces, is sure to make a statement!

Its was a treat to work on this pattern project with Katie and Shari, together we brought my vision to life and streamlined the construction, showcasing a slightly different version of the lining construction technique shown in the LJ Ginza Girl Coast Dress pattern. The construction results in a very cleanly finished fully lined interior, with sleeve hems sewn prior to turning the coat right side out. It's outlined in the pattern step by steps, but also a little hard to explain through photos so I made a little video to be sure you have success when making your own Bercy Village Peplum Blazer too!
Follow along to see how it works! I've created a full sew-along video. It's a visual of the entire sewing process, without talking, sort of like you're just sitting by my side watching as I go! I invite you to sew with me... (There's section in the middle that stops to explain the lining/turning technique)
As an added bonus here's the turning technique saved separately, for quick and easy reference!
Love the floral print fabric used in the cover example? It's a Liberty Fabrics quilting cotton, Heirloom Collection Floral Joy A. You can find it still in stock at Morris Textiles!
Ok, now let’s take a look at the biggest trends in spring outerwear for kids and teens this year—plus a look back at vintage styles that have influenced the trends. Over the next few installments we'll touch on these elements with inspiration and ideas!
Insider Update: The Liberty Jane Euro Libby: Savile Row Cropped Trench Coat is in the works - watch for more on that later this month!
1. Cropped Trench Coats – Classic Gets Cool
This is the surprise hit of the season. The cropped trench coat takes the traditional trench silhouette—lapels, buttons, epaulettes—and shortens it for a fresh, streetwear-inspired twist. Perfect for tweens and teens who want something sophisticated but still playful. Look for versions in soft beige, dusty pink, or sage green with modern touches like belt detailing or contrast stitching.
2. A Nod to Vintage: 1930s–1950s Style Comebacks
Designers are borrowing inspiration from the past this spring. Think boxy, double-breasted jackets, sailor collars, and coats with big buttons and belted waists—all with a child-friendly twist. These retro pieces bring a touch of old-school charm and timeless polish, often paired with modern prints or casual denim to keep the look fresh. It’s like something out of a vintage photo—only cooler, and ready for the playground.
3. Bomber Jackets – Back and Bolder
This 90s throwback is hitting playgrounds and skateparks alike. Bomber jackets are coming in metallics, neon color-blocking, and even embroidered graphics for a custom vibe. Teens are especially loving oversized bomber fits with sporty stripes and logos.
4. Tech Windbreakers and Raincoats
Spring showers bring sleek waterproof gear. Windbreakers and raincoats are getting a techy upgrade with breathable, water-repellent materials, taped seams, and packable designs. Bonus points for those that fold into a pouch or tuck into a backpack.
5. Blazers for the Fashion-Forward
Blazers are stepping out of the classroom and into everyday wear. Teens are mixing fitted blazers with jeans, sneakers, or even track pants for a high-low look. Kids' brands are offering playful takes with patch pockets, ruffles, bold florals, and fun linings.
Here are 5 great fabric types for lightweight spring jackets, blazers, or coats—perfect for kids and teens:
Cotton Twill and Stretch Denim: Used in utility jackets and cropped trench coats, these materials provide structure without stiffness.
Nylon or Ripstop Nylon: Super lightweight, water-resistant, and perfect for unpredictable spring weather. Best for windbreakers and packable raincoats.
In spring, color palettes are playful, with something for every personality:
Citrus Shades: Think lemon yellow, tangerine, and lime. These bright, happy colors are showing up in puffers and rain jackets.
Pastels with a Twist: Lilac, mint, and peachy pink tones are big, often paired with unexpected contrast stitching or zippers.
Earthy Neutrals: Sage green, sandy beige, and clay are grounding colors used in utility jackets and cropped trench coats.
Graphic Patterns & Prints: From tie-dye and camo to bold checkerboards and floral mashups, patterns are in. Some even glow in the dark or change with temperature.
For Younger Dolls, like WellieWishers, Bitty Baby, Little Darling, and Siblies:
Outfit 1: Lemon yellow lightweight puffer + denim joggers + graphic tee + white sneakers.
Outfit 2: Camo raincoat + navy cargo pants + rain boots + baseball cap.
Outfit 3: Pastel windbreaker + leggings with side stripes + hoodie underneath.
For Tween Age Dolls, Like American Girl, Our Generation, Ruby Red Fashion Friends, Gotz, Blythe, & Kids N Cats:
Outfit 1: Oversized bomber jacket + wide-leg jeans + crop hoodie + Converse-style sneakers.
Outfit 2: Dusty pink cropped trench coat + pleated skirt + high-top sneakers + hair clips..
Outfit 4: Double-breasted retro blazer + cuffed jeans + loafers + canvas backpack for a vintage vibe.
Pro tip: Let the outerwear be the outfit’s personality. A neutral base layer makes a bold jacket shine, while statement pants or tees can help balance out a minimal coat.
Spring outerwear is more than just a layer—it’s a statement! Utilize some creative thinking and mix comfort, performance, and personality to create some serious style! From sporty bombers and cropped trench coats to polished blazers and throwback coats with vintage charm, there’s a jacket for every mood and moment.
Such a pretty spring pattern. I learned a new way to put the lining and jacket together. Will be fun to try this new, to me, technique.
Such a cute little jacket! Loved seeing the progress in sewing, and got a few tips to help when I finally try my hand at making similar garments. Mine will be a lot slower going though since I do my sewing all by hand (no machine lol)! Can’t wait to see more!
I absolutely love the jacket. The colors picked for the release is spot on too. Great pattern; it will be going in my wish list. :-)
I have always loved layering in Spring clothing since I live in the South and it can be 40 degrees in the morning and 80 degrees in the afternoon. Our son says we frequently have all four seasons in a day. The layered look has been a staple here in the South since I was a child! Love sharing it with our favorite dolls.
Absolutely adorable! Love the pattern and sew-along, thanks!
