The MyAngieGirl version of the 18th Century Colonial Gown is a one-piece design that gives you the look of highest fashion without the fussiness of separate petticoats and stomachers. This pattern features a long pleated skirt, three-quarter length sleeves, built-in stomacher and petticoat panel, and fastens in the back.
During the 18th Century (1701 – 1800) gowns made with the open front bodice used the stomacher, or ornamental cloth, to cover the stays and chemise worn beneath. Sometimes the stomacher was made to match the gown; other times the stomacher was elaborately decorated to accent the gown.
A online search for stomachers in the 18th Century shows a wide range of embellishments used including embroidery, fringe, puffed fabric, ribbon trim, and even quilting. How will you decorate your stomacher?
This PDF sewing pattern is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.
Suggested fabrics for the Colonial Gown include cotton and blends, lightweight wovens, lightweight silks or taffeta, etc.

The pattern was easy to follow. I enjoyed embellishing the stomacher with three embroidered roses as I used a print for the dress and plain color for the petticoat panel. I bought a few inches more of an antique style lace so that I could gather it slightly for fullness at the neckline and bottom of the sleeves. Think my granddaughter will enjoy adding this to her doll’s wardrobe.
Made 2 dresses for Felicity from this pattern and I thought it turned out amazing. I would recommend this pattern to others. I believe the directions were well written making it easy to follow. If you are looking for a colonial gown I highly recommend this pattern!
