Cheerful Cables Knit Dress 18" Doll Clothes Knitting Pattern

10 reviews   |

The Cheerful Cables Dress is a versatile, all-occasion knit with a refined, under-stated elegance. A classic, tailored dress silhouette is used to showcase two pretty, decorative elements; a lacy, V-neck detail on the fitted bodice, and cabled skirt with slight A-line flare. Worked from the top down, and using both straight and circular knitting, this knit employs a seamless construction method to minimize bulky seams. Raglan sleeves with additional increases are used to create short sleeves with a gentle puffed appearance. Integrated garter button bands create a full, rear opening for easy dressing. Designed to fit 18-inch soft bodied dolls such as American Girl® and Maplelea® dolls, this pattern includes two length options for creating a dress that falls above the knee or, just below the knee. This knit is rated intermediate as it includes both cabling and knitting in the round for sleeve finishing.

Beautiful Knitted Dress

The Cheerful Cables pattern is an easy knit and a perfect fit on an American Girl doll. I knitted a length that is halfway between the short and the long versions, because I was running out of yarn and it turned out to be exactly the length I wanted.

I loved using this pattern! It was recommended that I put stitch markers into places on the bodice, which I did. It made following the pattern so much easier! The thing I stumbled on were the instructions for Rows 44 through 51 and then rows 52 to 55. I had already done four complete cable row sets before I figured out that the third set was where the button hole was supposed to be! I was getting the Cables done correctly but I missed doing button hole number four because I wasn’t keeping track of my rows correctly. I did finally figure it out and get the rest of the cable rows correct and I did get buttonhole number five in the right place on row 69. It was my first time doing circular knitting with double pointed needles. Thank goodness for YouTube tutorials! The whole dress turned out wonderfully well and I think this is the favorite knitted outfit I’ve made in the last two years!! I will make it again in other colors for my other dolls.

Great and Cute!

My overall experience has been great. I'm finishing up on my third dress (one is a waist-length sweater). The pattern is accurate and detailed, and would be great for an advanced beginner knitter, in my opinion. It's also been fun to play around with the pattern, as it is so well defined.

Nicely written pattern. I did this with light fingering/heavy laceweight (WoolLike from Michaels) and size 0 needles and got a perfect fit for Gotz Little Kidz doll. Used the extra cable repeat, but the only "change" to the pattern was an extra row of decreases at the sleeve cuff for a nicer fit.
