Dressing Baby... for Summer on the Prairie Doll Clothes Pattern for 8" Baby Dolls

  |

While out enjoying the sunshine of summer, protect baby's delicate skin with a sturdy, wide-brimmed sunbonnet that ties closed. Baby's summer gown features short sleeves with ruffles, a round or square collar, and snaps closed in the back. The gown can be made with or without grow tucks that were taken out as baby grew taller. Both boys and girls wore long gowns for the first years of life to help keep babies from crawling into the many dangers of daily life, such as an open fire, sharp metal tools, or dangerous rivers and streams. The long trailing gown slowed down babies allowing busy mothers or older siblings a chance to move baby away from dangers. A shorter toddler gown, is included in the pattern for baby's first steps in the soft grass.

A pinafore for baby was an essential protective layer that could be washed more frequently than baby's gowns. The pinafore snaps closed in the back with optional beautiful ruffles at the sleeve and hemline. The gown and pinafore bodices are lined and the skirts feature flat fell seams to prevent any irritation to baby's sensitive skin. While "grow stripes" were tucks added for fast growing children, these tucks were often included on infant gowns for optional additional decorative detail. This historically accurate ensemble is perfect for baby on those long summer days!
