Knitted Monkey Doll and Clothes Knitting Pattern

Genniewren says: "This particular knitting pattern started out many years ago, as a one-off knitted toy for a lady at work who was leaving to have a baby, and she just happened to be a tad obsessed with sock monkeys – so much so that this was the theme for her newborn’s nursery décor! As so often happens when you gift something hand-made that’s cute, others asked me to make knitted monkey dolls for their babies too. So before my wrists dropped off from too much knitting, I decided to write down the original pattern for the monkey doll and the scarf, and there it sat on my computer for a good few years. Recently I worked on the pattern again, to size it as an accessory for 18” dolls, and to include some removable clothing to add play value."

This pattern comprises two separate PDFs, one for the monkey dolls and one for the monkey dolls’ clothing. This is purely for length reasons.

This first part of the pattern is for the two styles of hand knitted monkey doll: a standing monkey with no shaping for the seat, and a seated monkey with a shaped seat knitted to look like a turned heel (made using short rows) and two contrast color yarns. A short row technique is used for the muzzle for both monkey styles, as well as the shaped seat, but the standing monkey is a good place to start if you are unfamiliar with short row knitting.
Both monkeys are worked flat on two needles and knitted in parts, which are then sewn, filled with polyester fiber toy filling and the separate parts sewn together.

The instructions in this pattern are for a small monkey knitted in sock/fingering yarn. However, as the pattern is written in counted rows, if you want to make a larger monkey, you can easily resize the pattern by using thicker yarn and larger needles.

The included clothing pattern is a companion pattern to the Knitted Monkey Dolls pattern. The clothing instructions are for a small monkey knitted in sock/fingering yarn.

Instructions are included in this pattern to make a hat, scarf, skirt, vest and jacket for your little monkey doll, so you and your doll can play dress-up games.

The clothing in this pattern is deliberately simple, using easy stitches without much sewing, so the garments are quick to knit.

Your 18 inch doll would love to have a little monkey friend! This one is just the right size.

This PDF knitting pattern by Genniewren Designs makes a standing monkey doll that stands about 5 1/2 inches tall from head to toe or a seated doll that is about 3 3/4 inches tall when seated and the included companion PDF makes clothing and accessories for the doll.

Recommended Yarns:  Sock yarn, fingering yarn (#1 weight), UK 4ply yarn.
If you use larger needles and heavier yarn you will need more yarn than suggested.

Supplies Needed:
MONKEY DOLL:

   •   One pair of US Size 1 (metric 2.25 mm) knitting needles.
   •   One pair of US Size 2 (metric 2.75 mm) knitting needles – needed only for casting on the body.
   •   Blunt-ended yarn needle for darning in yarn ends and sewing the monkey doll and clothing.
   •   1.75 oz (50g) of main color fingering/UK 4ply/sock yarn (#1 weight) is sufficient to knit both monkey dolls. In this pattern I used a beige/white marl yarn to mimic the original style of socks, but you can use any color you choose for your own monkey doll.

   •   0.75 oz (21g) of first contrast fingering/UK 4ply/sock yarn (#1 weight). I used cream in the examples.
   •   0.5 oz (14g) of second contrast fingering/UK 4ply/sock yarn (#1 weight). I used red in the examples.
   •   4 stitch re-closable markers (I find the bulb safety pin style is perfect for the job).
   •   Small amounts of additional yarn to knit the clothes (this is an ideal way to use up those small balls left over from other projects).
   •   1 yard of black yarn or embroidery floss for the embroidered eyes, OR a small piece of black felt for the felt eyes, OR two ¼”/6mm doll buttons for button eyes (for older children and adult collectors only).
   •   1 x ½lb (250g) package of ultra soft polyester toy filling is enough for both monkey dolls.

CLOTHING:

   •   One pair of US Size 1 (metric 2.25 mm) knitting needles.
   •   One pair of US Size 2 (2.75mm) knitting needles (used for cast on and bind off only).
   •   Blunt-ended yarn needle for darning in yarn ends and sewing the clothing.
   •   1.75 oz (50g) of main color fingering/UK 4ply/sock yarn (#1 weight) is sufficient to knit all the clothes, but you can use oddments of the same weight yarn left over from other projects if preferred.
   •   Buttons if desired.
