Whether she’s sunning herself on the beach in Nice, relaxing on the deck of a yacht or strolling along a Parisian Boulevard in the spring sunshine, the Lady Sarah Rick Rack Hat is the ideal accessory for your 18” doll. Perfect for spring, summer, fall and even those crisp sunny days of winter, this is one hat your doll will not want to be without.
What’s more, it folds almost flat, so it’s perfect for stashing in your luggage when you go on vacation. Give it a quick shake and it’s ready to wear.
The rick rack lace work is created on top of a shell of wash-away stabilizer, but you could use net tulle instead and still have the same random lace work effect. Rick rack is available in so many colors and widths, that you can have great fun making a whole bunch of hats in all different colors.
Instructions are included in the PDF pattern for the rick rack flowers and roses so you can accessorize your hat.
Don’t feel limited to just using rick rack to decorate your hat: Ribbons, lace, feathers and fabric flowers will also look great with this versatile hat.
PLEASE NOTE: This hat is sized to fit dolls with a head circumference of 12”-12.5”.
Recommended Fabrics: Suggested fabrics "fabric style" water soluble stabilizer (not the clear film) or tulle net for the hat shell, Rick rack braid, or other double-sided braid to create the lace work.
- 9 yards of 5/8” wide rick rack (tip to tip height) or 12 yards of narrower rick rack.
- 25" x 9" of fabric-type water soluble embroidery stabilizer (e.g. Vilene WSS). NOTE: If you cannot get hold of the water soluble stabilizer (WSS) then you can use tulle instead, although the tulle does give a different look to the hat.
- Sewing thread to match the rickrack.
- Spare pieces of rickrack braid and/or ribbon to make flowers for embellishment.

I love the pattern, at first look, I thought it would be too hard, but it really is a fun sew and goes together very well. Lots of idea's to make for different occasions, like a hat for the "Kentucky Derby" today!
I enjoyed using this pattern. I couldn't get the water soluble material, so I used palest grey netting. I also made a second hat using the fabric from the dress, and that also turned out very nicely. Lots of choices from such a simple pattern!
I had the pleasure of testing Lady Sarah and it was fun to 'scribble' with the rick rack. It took a few minutes for me to suppress my straight grown up and let my go wherever little child bubble up. Instructions and photos are clear, and the finished hat is adorable. Suggestion: make lots of flowers in different colours and attach them with safety pins. Match your hat to every outfit!
